Ohhhh this is what they are talking about:

"Red States Feed at Federal Trough, Blue States Supply the Feed

Monday, September 27, 2004

The Tax Foundation has released a fascinating report showing which states benefit from federal tax and spending policies, and which states foot the bill.

US 50 States MapThe report shows that of the 32 states (and the District of Columbia) that are "winners" -- receiving more in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 76% are Red States that voted for George Bush in 2000. Indeed, 17 of the 20 (85%) states receiving the most federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Red States. Here are the Top 10 states that feed at the federal trough (with Red States highlighted in bold):

States Receiving Most in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. D.C. ($6.17)
2. North Dakota ($2.03)
3. New Mexico ($1.89)
4. Mississippi ($1.84)
5. Alaska ($1.82)
6. West Virginia ($1.74)
7. Montana ($1.64)
8. Alabama ($1.61)
9. South Dakota ($1.59)
10. Arkansas ($1.53)

In contrast, of the 16 states that are "losers" -- receiving less in federal spending than they pay in federal taxes -- 69% are Blue States that voted for Al Gore in 2000. Indeed, 11 of the 14 (79%) of the states receiving the least federal spending per dollar of federal taxes paid are Blue States. Here are the Top 10 states that supply feed for the federal trough (with Blue States highlighted in bold):

States Receiving Least in Federal Spending Per Dollar of Federal Taxes Paid:

1. New Jersey ($0.62)
2. Connecticut ($0.64)
3. New Hampshire ($0.68)
4. Nevada ($0.73)
5. Illinois ($0.77)
6. Minnesota ($0.77)
7. Colorado ($0.79)
8. Massachusetts ($0.79)
9. California ($0.81)
10. New York ($0.81)

Two states -- Florida and Oregon (coincidentally, the two closest states in the 2000 Presidential election) -- received $1.00 in federal spending for each $1.00 in federal taxes paid.

Actually I do. If you will look at the Arkansas on the map, I'm in the blue county just south of Little Rock.

If we could get Wayne, Genesee and Saginaw counties to secede, Michigan WOULD be a red state!

no counties, but 65 out of 400 cities and towns did. There was a pretty good story about it in the Globe, actually.

Massachusetts is a wierd place. There are a lot more "conservatives" here than you think (look at our Gov). We have a lot of dyed in the wool Irish dems though, we also have a lot of crappy mini-cities with high concentrations of democratic "block voters" (trying to be PC).

The uber-libs don't actually live in Boston, they live in Cambridge, Brookline and Newton - cities that are adjacent to Boston - if you weren't from here you'd think they were all one big city, but they aren't.

The gay marriage thing happened largely due to the fact that our legislature, lifetime hacks who couldn't earn 50G a year elsewhere, where too scared to vote on the issue. They didn't want to offend anyone and lose their jobs so after years of having and avoiding the issue on the plate, it went to the judiciary.

Here's an example of how a Boston Irish Catholic votes - my aunt is 65, a retired teacher - very catholic and very socially conservative. 4 years ago my entire family was talking about the election (about 2 weeks beforehand). I asked my mother who she was voting for. She said Bush. My aunt let out a huff, and my mother said, "Kath, I would never vote for Gore". My aunt looked disgusted and she said, but that's who we always vote for (meaning the democrats).

To tell you the truth, I think it goes back to the turn of the century Irish vs the WASPs BS.

I grew up in a very Blue collar area of Boston called Dorchester and a lot of my friends (guys in their mid and late 20's and many of them union) voted for Bush. So I think things are slowly changing.

Let's not question the patriotism of our liberal citizens, even though their first response to losing an election is to contemplate tearing the country in two (again) if the electorate doesn't see their point of view.

Yes I have heard that reason given as to why so many Catholics vote demorat. In terms of the abortion issue they just hold their nose and vote for the pro-choice demorat over the pro-life Republican.

Exactly, that's what they're talking about! And yet they continue to favor bigger federal gov't. And, as per your info, my state NJ is dead last. :-0 And yet the dummies here continue to vote Dem. It must be all the toxic waste in this state - it's affected their thinking.

Ok, look, here's the deal. I think if a bunch of us got together and helped them, we could have them all moved out of the country by New Years Day. I have a big truck and a trailer. Anyone else with me. Of course, we would have to find a way to decontaminate the vehicles after we are done. Could be a problem.

Unilateral secession is not a constitutional process. Texas v White confirms that point of view. Professor Williams may be a fine economist, but he is not a very good historian. His article has been thoroughly debunked here at FR, and continues to be each time it rears its ugly head.

Garbage. Texas v. White was ruled against secession, but beyond that point it has precious little going for it. The case's internal logic is a nightmare of inconsistency and contradiction placing it in that category of truly bad and poorly written cases where you will find such names as Plessy and Roe.

Besides, given the timing of that case do you honestly think that the supreme court could have ruled any other way? Had they done so they would have completely undermined everything the yankees spent the last four years fighting for and potentially even risked reigniting the war. So instead they draft up a weak and self-referentially inconsistent damnatio memoriae on the confederacy to push the issue under the carpet. As to Williams being "debunked" here at FR, I certainly haven't seen it and if that is to be taken as a claim that you or any other member of the Wlat brigade has done the "debunking" it may be dismissed as a matter of absurdity...unless by "debunking" you mean making up court cases, amending existing rulings, trumping up false charges against harassed judges, making up non-existant battles, and changing the name of units in the federal army into "militias" on a whim as it suits the convenience of your desired position.

Who's up for a Sherman-style march on NYC...?

Good idea. Fly planes into NYC buildings. You and Osama bin Laden together.

Too impersonal. The South will settle for nothing short of a Northern version of Sherman's Atlanta.

As you are aware, there are other cases, some of which were Reconstruction era, and some which came later, which comfirm the fundamentals of Texas v White with regard to the legality of secession.

There has never been a successful, lawful, secession in the United States.

Are these people seriesly maintaining that votes should count in direct proportion to the tax dollars paid by the voter? That's not very egalitarian!

However if they are paying for most of the bloated federal government (which I don't accept), then they are also its greatest beneficiaries - or victims, to be more accurate.
