"Christmas" versus "Holiday" (Vanity)

Posted on 11/08/2004 7:28:03 PM PST by carrier-aviator

Is anyone else as sick as I am of the one-for-one substitution of the word "Hoilday" for "Christmas," as in Holiday Party, Holiday Shopping, Holiday Season, the Baby's First "Holiday." Christmas is a federal holiday just like Veterans' Day or Thanksgiving. Why shouldn't we mention it?

Take the pledge: refuse to use the word "Holiday" when "Christmas" is correct. To your neighbors and fellow employees say MERRY CHRISTMAS, never Happy Holidays, and if they object simply tell them you are wishing them happiness on the upcoming federal holiday. If they object further, ask them if they'll be going to work on December 25th.

What the hell difference does it make to you and your life? I'm Jewish. It's nice when people say Happy Holidays. I wouldn't care either way, but I don't understand why you care so much.

Not only do I insist on "Christmas", I also never use the abbreviation "X-mas". My Christmas cards always depict the true meaning of the holiday, and NEVER has a Santa on them.

And, one last thought, the true meaning of the holiday has nothing to do with "family" or getting together with friends, or anything other than God's sacrifice for us.

TRIPLE NON-POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AMENS TO THAT

I understand the use of it by Jewish or other non-Christian groups. But what I find odd is when you see a commercial or a card or whatever that has a very obvious Christian/Christmas reference and then flip-flops "happy holidays" or "season's greetings"

For instance, the Planters peanuts TV ad that has just started running shows Mr. Peanut sitting with a reindeer and Santa Claus, and then says "Happy Holidays." If you're going to show Santa Claus, you've obviously committed to it being a Christmas advertisement....

We are a Predominately Christian Society.

& we have "Evolved" a WONDERFUL Tradition called "Christmas!!"

"Christmas" has TRANSCENDED most Other Cultural Traditions!

"Christmas" is SPECIAL; MANY Cultures Celebrate this Holiday.

The Concept of "Christmas" has Permeated MANY cultures!

The "Idea That" "Christmas" should be abandoned is "Cultural Suicide!!"

DESPITE "Cultural Imperatives," "Christmas" is a "Concept" UNTOUCHED BY ANY "Cultural Imperatives!"

"CHRISTMAS" is a "Concept/Belief" BEYOND ANY Cultural Definitions; "Christmas" is the "EMBODIMENT OF" "Eternal Life!!"

Christmas represents the HOPE that we exist in a "Life Eternal!"

Yes. The was an article on this in National Review last year. Of course it gets pretty ridiculous when people IN CHURCH say "happy holidays".

Of course it gets pretty silly when the only business that says Merry Christmas is the sign in front of the local strip club. LOL!

My first year in college I said Merry Christmas to my Marxist-loving sociology teacher. He returned with a happy holidays.

MLK day really upsets me! We get that day off from school here in Arizona. I think what MLK did for civil rights for African Americans was great. But they won't give us Presidents day off which celebrates the accompishments of some of our greatest presidents. Such as Abraham Lincoln, who without him, the Civil War probably wouldn't have ended the way it did, which probably would have never given slaves any chance at freedom. Without Abe Lincoln, MLK wouldn't have had a cause to work on.

I don't say "Holiday", I say "Christmas".

I don't say "insurgent", I say "terrorist".

I don't say "Middle-eastern-operated-convenience-store", I say "sleeper cell"

What would Jesus want??? To worship Him in spirit and in truth. Check this out. The Pagan Origins of Christmas

Now add to that the scripture in Jer. 10:

God and the Idol

1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2Thus says the LORD: "Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, For the Gentiles are dismayed at them. 3For the customs of the peoples are futile; For one cuts a tree from the forest, The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 4They decorate it with silver and gold; They fasten it with nails and hammers So that it will not topple. 5They are upright, like a palm tree, And they cannot speak; They must be carried, Because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, For they cannot do evil, Nor can they do any good."

Hummmm.... that sounds like we should not keep Christmas at all. Perhaps, according to the scriptures, we should be keeping the 10 commandments, including the 4th one, the Sabbath day, and keep the Holy Days Jesus Himself kept, which are listed in the Bible.

This is my childhood these P.C. rubes are messing with here, and I take it more personal than some. Listen, I'm not Jewish (though I support the Jews) and I think that Kwanzaa is a pile of revisionist crap, so Unless you wanna ring in the new year with chiclets for teeth, anybody who approaches me this December 25th better forget about the "happy holiday" jive. With me, it's just got to be...

Nativity story, fir tree, big gifts, green-and-red wrapping, light display, egg nog, fruit cake, ham dinner, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians after he conquers the living room, Jimmy f***ing Stewart taking a dive off that bridge.... *100% undiluted American CHRISTMAS*.

Yes, I am sick of it too. I refuse to say "Happy Holidays". I remember in the early '80's I worked for a school district on concert programs and we were told not to use any religious artwork and the music couldn't contain any references to Jesus, God, Virgin Mary, etc.

Nutmeg!!!

Everytime I see your username I think of Christmas.

I took the name nutmeg because I'm a Connecticut resident, and one of CT's nicknames is "The Nutmeg State". (Other nicknames: The Constitution State and The Land of Steady Habits [I kid you not!])

The Nutmeg State name came about because peddlars used to go around the state in "the old days" selling wooden nutmegs.(???) Um... I know... don't ask me! Connecticut can be a pretty strange place at times... LOL

I like your memories of "nutmeg" much better! :-)

AMEN!!

The Oregonian had a picture of a city worker stringing Christmas lights on a downtown streetlight, the caption read "Holiday lights are strung on downtown streets."

Uh, excuse me, NO OTHER Holyday besides Christmas has Christmas lights!

Two years ago in Medford they had a downtown Holiday Tree celebration...not ONE mention of Christmas, but they DID have a Mariachi band!

Also, here in town they have a Downtown Holiday Open House celebration where all the downtown stores string Christmas lights and have Christmas trees...we refuse to go to those because year after year, all the decorations are referred to as "Holiday decorations."

I'd rather shop in Boro Park, totally Chassidac, where they have no Christmas decorations, than shop in a store or go to a community "Holiday Celebration," at least the Chassids are more honest of their disbelief in Jesus.

Holiday essay series. Interesting idea. I wonder if, when you get to next December, any of the students will mention Pope Julius I? Columbus Day would also be an intriguing one. From what I've heard, the textbooks today differ greatly from what I recall.

Another version, Jeremiah 10:

1Hear the word which the Lord has spoken to you, O House of Israel!  2Thus said the Lord.  Do not learn to go the way of the nations, and do not be dismayed by portents in the sky; let the nations be dismayed by them!  3For the laws of the nations are delusions; for it is the work of a craftsman's hands.  He cuts down a tree in the forest with an ax.  4He adorns it with silver and gold, he fastens it with nails and hammer, so that it does not totter.  5They are like a scarecrow in a cucumber patch, they cannot speak, they have to be carried, for they cannot walk.  Be not afraid of them, for they can do no harm; nor is it in them to do any good. -- NEVI'IM
