"Christmas" versus "Holiday" (Vanity)

Is anyone else as sick as I am of the one-for-one substitution of the word "Hoilday" for "Christmas," as in Holiday Party, Holiday Shopping, Holiday Season, the Baby's First "Holiday." Christmas is a federal holiday just like Veterans' Day or Thanksgiving. Why shouldn't we mention it?

Take the pledge: refuse to use the word "Holiday" when "Christmas" is correct. To your neighbors and fellow employees say MERRY CHRISTMAS, never Happy Holidays, and if they object simply tell them you are wishing them happiness on the upcoming federal holiday. If they object further, ask them if they'll be going to work on December 25th.

In my experience, that statement is the last resort of people who can't respond to someone else's argument. It's a doubly self-defeating comment, because it sounds pretentious and self-absorbed, implying that you see yourself on some lofty perch of wisdom, looking down with "pity" on lesser, benighted folks --- and all because I complain (along with millions of others) that the word "Christmas" is being censored, which it obviously is! Have a happy Christmas!

Yesterday I received a call from a Jewish friend in New York who, when we were done with the business end of the call, wished me a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I had wished him a Happy Hanukkah earlier in December. We had both decided to have New Years parties in our homes. Another friend in Florida, a Hindu also wished me a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year yesterday.

A business lady that I have infrequent contact with asked me last month if the Mrs and I were going anywhere between Christmas and New Years. She is a Buddist.

Now if these three non Americans understand the difference between Christmas and the New Year what is afloat in America pushing us to say Happy Holidays rather than Merry Christmas and Happy New Years in concert. KM said, "Religion ... is the opium of the people." You don't mind if your beliefs in God are changed a bit do you? Relax, it is the American Court system doing the changing, so everything must be fine. Real fine of course, enjoy the evening triad news.

Hmmm. There's quite a majority of Mexicans who are Catholic. I suppose the left has gambled they are more susceptible to handouts than affirmation. Heckuva deal. OTOH, lately, the right's reaction is every bit as interesting.

In England, the contemporary form is "Happy Christmas" ... do you object to that? And do you know when the term "Merry Christmas' originated, and where? Maybe you are just wed to a term that is a mere few hundred years old ... It's possible.
Terms change, but the spirit of "Merry Christmas" is in "Happy Holidays." I use both, plus "Best of the Season" and I do so with goodwill.
The more the merrier.

No, it's the censorship of the word, "Christmas," that bothers me, and millions of other Americans. I don't care whether you put "happy" or "merry" or "blessed" in front of it; the problem is that the word itself -- Christmas -- is something that the PC crowd, and the folks who don't like our cultural traditions, are trying to obliterate, and they're having some success. They've already gotten places of commerce (Macy's, etc.) to purge the word.

Where did the term Christmas originate? and when? But you say it's not the word itself... and also imply that I am part of a PC cabal, or the victim of one, whose intent is to obliterate Christmas.
Words do change and evolve. I think we are witnessing that more than anything else.
Many times it's the secular crowd that determines where the advertisers' wording goes, not the reverse. The culture, and that means all of us, is evolving, taking our words along with us.
I just am very curious why the yowling about this now, not by you, but by some of the media. Why now? Are they seeking to further divide us? Bill O"Reilly is looking out for our souls? I think not.

Separation of Church and State is still an ongoing debate.

Freedom of Religion was sure a driving force in the creation of this country. 1776 + 228 of secularism, humanism, relativism, agnosticism, and atheism has made it FREEDOM FROM RELIGION.

It is confrontational in-your-face types like you that give Christmas a bad rap. Most of the bell ringers are minimum wage hired help and you should be lucky one of them hasn't "rung your bell" because of your bellicose attitude. If it was me, you'd wind up wearing the kettle as a hat !!!

I realize there is much to learn from the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and that loving your friends and family is a natural result. My comment was in reference to all of those people who keep saying that the "true meaning of Christmas" is being with your family, getting together with friends, or giving, or any of the other sentimental feel good stuff that ignores the fact that Christmas is the time that we celebrate the birth of Christ.

I guess my comment could have been a little harsh, but I get a bit frustrated with hearing that year after year.
