"Christmas" versus "Holiday" (Vanity)

Posted on 11/08/2004 7:28:03 PM PST by carrier-aviator

Is anyone else as sick as I am of the one-for-one substitution of the word "Hoilday" for "Christmas," as in Holiday Party, Holiday Shopping, Holiday Season, the Baby's First "Holiday." Christmas is a federal holiday just like Veterans' Day or Thanksgiving. Why shouldn't we mention it?

Take the pledge: refuse to use the word "Holiday" when "Christmas" is correct. To your neighbors and fellow employees say MERRY CHRISTMAS, never Happy Holidays, and if they object simply tell them you are wishing them happiness on the upcoming federal holiday. If they object further, ask them if they'll be going to work on December 25th.

Here's ther difference: In Judaism, our holidays are actually religious.

Huh?

The celebration of the birth of Christ is not religious?

No, because most people are people of goodwill and use both terms, not one to the exclusion of the other.

Plus the word "Holiday" has been used for ages and is a perfectly good word and not offensive in the least.

A couple of years ago I fell into this Happy Holidays trap and then one day a friend said to me "Don't you know you are offending all your Christian FRiends" so MERRY CHRISTMAS

And, one last thought, the true meaning of the holiday has nothing to do with "family" or getting together with friends, or anything other than God's sacrifice for us.

"Nothing" is rather strong and doesn't strike me as accurate at all. After all, the story of the Holy Family is part of the "true meaning".

I was in Home Depot doing some last minute shopping (Don't tell Pete) last Sunday and the cashier told me 'happy holidays' as I picked up my bag. I looked her in the eyes and said "Nope, Merry Christmas." She got a twinkle in her eye and said "Merry Christmas, it's rediculous these days, isn't it?" I agreed.

Jewish people don't celebrate Christmas....they celebrate Hanukkah."""

And your point is? Ninety percent of Americans celebrate Christmas - - and for the word to be censored out of the common vocabulary, by stores (which are catering to Christmas shoppers whether they admit it or not) and party-goes (whose parties are timed to precede Christmas), is OUTRAGEOUS, and I'm sick and tired of it. This is censorship --- and it's as bad as in Saudi Arabia. If you went there, they wouldn't mention Christmas either.

You cannot, however, tell businesses that they must have a Christmas party"""

Yes I can. I am free to withhold my business from stores that censor the word Christmas - - even though everybody knows that it's Christmas shoppers that they're selling to. I predict you'll see more and more organized efforts, even boycotts, by Americans who are tired of the politically correct censorship of the word, Christmas. Just as the anti-Christmas bigots and the PC police are free to try to censor the word, the rest of us are free to complain, and to punish them at the marketplace.

Yes, it's offensive if it's used (as it is these days) to censor the word Christmas, and drop the word Christmas down the memory hole.

I think stores and TV stations say "Happy Holidays" as a shortcut for Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukkah, and Happy New Year. """

NO, because you notice, they still say "Happy New Year." Happy Holidays is a phrase that's being used in order to consign "Christmas" down the memory hole. It's being used by people and businesses who either share the values or, or are intimidate by, PC and anti-Christmas elements, groups who are at war with our cultural traditions.

When the term "happy holiday" is used, it is being used to wish nothing more than "happiness." Nothing more. There is no implicit condemnation of Christmas, and nothing is being consigned down a "memory hole" .. whatever that is.
Take happiness and joy where you can get it. Peace, too.

Since you're not clear-headed, obviously the anwer is "no", I don't pity you for being something you are not.

I don't wish to launch an attack on you, but I do indeed pity you.

I have made it a practice to ask Salvation Army bell ringers what the "Salvation" means in the name of their organization. Only about 1/3 have a clue. I have a very well written tract that explains God's Gift of Eternal Life and have had opportunity to share Christ on numerous occasions with the ringers themselves as well as interested "religious" folk who are nearby.

It is confrontational in-your-face types like you that give Christmas a bad rap.
Most of the bell ringers are minimum wage hired help and you should be lucky one of them hasn't "rung your bell" because of your bellicose attitude. If it was me, you'd wind up wearing the kettle as a hat !!!

Yes there is, because in recent years, it's being used as a replacement for Christmas -- and the word Christmas is being jettisoned.
