Howard Dean considering bid to chair Democratic Party

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Former presidential candidate Howard Dean is considering a bid to become chairman of the national Democratic Party.

Steve Grossman, himself a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Dean had told him he was thinking about it.

Dean was traveling today in New York and unavailable for comment. His spokeswoman, Laura Gross, said ``it was far too early to be speculating on that.''

The 240 members of the Democratic National Convention will elect a new chair early next year. Several names are already being mentioned, including former Clinton aide Harold Ickes; Donna Brazile, who ran Al Gore's presidential campaign, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

Dean has been outspoken since the beginning of his presidential bid in saying that the Democratic Party must establish a separate and unique identity from Republicans.

The next chairman will replace Terry McAuliffe, whose term is ending.

I can't think of a better person for the job. I'm sure he will lead the Dems to monumental gains in Congress and to the White House, just like Terry McAuliffe did.

Why, just teaching all Dems to scream "Yeaaaaaaargh" as a battle cry should garner millions of votes.

Is the Democrats way of reaching out to "values" voters?

The wonderful thing is that just about anyone the libs put up there have about the same track record as Terry McAwful's. How about Bob Shrum, for example? He's lost how many in a row? Seven, eight? And they keep bringing him back to run another losing campaign.

Hubba-hubba!

That's why Harold Ickes name is being mentioned as a possibility for the DNC chair too. Ickes is a Clinton lackey for sure, and Hillary and Bill want their own people running the party in preparation for 2008. Howard Dean chairing the DNC would be pure entertainment for us, but it would also start a civil war in the Democratic Party between the Clintonistas and the non-Clintonistas. In that fight my money is on the Clintonistas. It will be interesting to watch this all play out.

"It looks like they want Dean to be DNC chair so he won't be able to run against Hillary."

Or maybe it's an attempt to wrest control of the party from the Clintonistas.

Agreed. The slightest bit of pressure will bring out the "best" of his intemperate and snide self. And it's a highly visible and stressful job.

In any case, it's good to see the D's are NOT interested in moderating their tone.
