Specter was asked twice if the President had a mandate. Specter hemmed and hawed with the first answer...then when pressed said the President does not have a mandate.
THIS GUY HAS GOT TO GO!!!!
For me...that is the signal from the White House to let him be.
I can only deduce that they've made some quid pro quo deals concerning Specter's election and W's nominees.
I'll now hold my fire. Once we merge with the enemy on the nominees I'll watch for Specter's activity. If at that point he gets in the way, the White House will turn on him and I'll get back to going after him.
For now it is clear, the White House will obliquely support him...therefore I cease fire.

No, as much as I admire what President Reagan accomplished, his '84 landslide was an affirmation, not a mandate, because of the non-ideological themes of his reelection campaign. Reagan had a true mandate with less votes in 1980 than in 1984 because that campaign was ideological.
Landslides and mandates are not mutually exclusive, but they are two different animals, one arithmetic and the other ideological.
Did you hear it too? Pres. Bush has no mandate, and furthermore, 55 is not 60 (senators). Gee I thought it was a majority. I guess he's counting on filibusters. Hope they derail his appointment to the committee. He's no Republican.
If Rendell has presidential aspirations, the governorship is a better platform from which to make the jump. I think he stays in Harrisburg for the time being. Plus, your motorcade can't drive 110MPH up I-95 every Sunday so you can be a panelist on Eagles Postgame...
Bush and Santorum(sp) made a huge mistake supporting this Specter nutcase. Write your senators and raise hell and make sure Specter does not get the judiciary chair.

That depends on the Senate rules adopted for this Congress. Four years ago, Daschle forced through rules that would force a 50-50 split plus one vote for the majority. The new 55-45 split should create an opportunity to increase the number of Republicans on all committees. I'm sure the Republicans will force an even bigger number on the Judiciary Committee. I think that committee should have at least a 55-45 split plus 2 or 3.
Especially considering in 2000 he ran ahead of the President in PA.

I think you're right, although deep down inside, I'd feel better with someone else heading that committee. However, maybe Specter has the ability to get it done, which others may not - the only question will be how his feet are going to be held to the fire once he's chairman of the committee.
I have a very special place in my heart for the good people of TN, you guys really saved us, big time!!!!
Well, you can disagree whether a 3% margin in the vote constitutes a mandate. It's a win, but not a land slide. Remember service in the Senate is based on seniority and it's a system that none of the want to upset out of self interest. If I had to bet, I'd say that Arlen is safe.
