A Marijuana Breakthrough?
The Scotsman ^ | Nov. 5, 2004 | David Kohn

Posted on 11/05/2004 1:38:10 PM PST by Ahriman

A decade ago, when Daniele Piomelli went to scientific conferences, he was often the only researcher studying cannabinoids, the class of chemicals that give marijuana users a high. His work often drew sniggers and jokes; but not any more. At the recent annual Society for Neuroscience conference in San Diego last week, scientists delivered almost 200 papers on the subject.

Why all the attention? Many scientists believe marijuana-like drugs might be able to treat a wide range of diseases, far beyond the nausea and chronic pain typically treated with medical marijuana.

Researchers presented tantalising evidence that cannabinoid drugs can help treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease - Parkinson’s disease and obesity. Other researchers are studying whether the compounds can help victims of stroke and multiple sclerosis.

Although the chemicals work on the same area of the nervous system, the new drugs are much more refined and targeted than marijuana, with few of its side effects.

"Cannabinoids have a lot of pharmaceutical potential," says Piomelli, a neuroscientist at the University of California. "A lot of people are very excited."

Why would you think that anyone would be interested in your stupid, wreckless behavior?

Apparently you're interested since you've taken the time to post such a nice reply.

And yet they'll scream bloody murder if some liberal proposes to legislate what car they should drive, what food they should eat, or how they should raise their children. I continue to be amazed as to how the control freaks on the right can somehow distinguish their insistence that I surrender my liberty to their fears that I'm incompetent to make decisions for myself from the control freaks on the left that view me equally as incompetent but for a whole different list of controls.

Shuddup and put that gun/cigarette/joint down... You can't be trusted with it..

...And by the way put your seatbelt on. ;-)

Because we don't want folks having a three-joint lunch. The three martini lunch was bad enough. Bunch of dope heads.

Of course your assault on liberty has no down side now, does it?

"200 papers on the subject"

Papers? What kind of papers?

Could it be rolling papers?

How did a thread of the benefits of cannaboid (Marinol) research get corrupted into a 'smoke your joint' thread?

Everyone has a past and has done things they shouldn't have...

Course Ol' Cracker's got a past, 'cept he's learned so much from his mistakes he's fully qualified to lead our lives for us. Why are you such an ingrate? ;)

Funny they want to create a marijuana-like drug. Isn't that like creating a poultry and bread-like chicken sandwich?

I seriously doubt that you rely on willow-bark tea when you have a headache. You may not even rely on the "willow-bark-like drug," aspirin anymore -- but instead on "aspirin-like" drugs like ibuprofen.

Just because you may get medical benefit from fouling your lungs with pot smoke, doesn't mean it can't be done better, and far more safely.

I can't speak for everyone but tight asses telling me what to do when I'm not hurting anyone just sets me off a little.

I know, I know. If it weren't for the freaks on the left and right controlling me, there wouldn't be any children left! I'm that much of a mess. Bless the controllers.

So instead of sacrificing unborn embryos, all Michael J. Fox needs to do is toke up?

The real solution is to toke up on embryos. < /sarcasm >

Vegans should be alright with this. They'll eat the placenta

I found this ODD exchange in the thread I selected:

2004-10-15 23:12 Is it vegan to bite your fingernails?

Yes because my fingernails belong to me..but the placenta belongs to my baby.

There goes the left's argument for abortion that a fetus is just so much tissue...

Honestly, I tried it a few times (less than five) in college. I'm only here for the enjoyment of watching the folks insist that they're protecting liberty by destroying it. Usually that'll get me called a "dope" or a "doper" or some such by the self-appointed "morality" dragoons.
