METHUEN, Mass. -- A 10-year-old girl was killed when her father parked his truck in a pile of leaves in which she and a friend were hiding, the family said. The other girl was seriously injured.

Family members said 36-year-old construction worker James Gravel did not know he had run over the girls until he got out and heard daughter Natalie calling him.

"She said, 'Daddy, I can't breathe,"' said Gravel's sister, Jennifer Gravel.

Natalie died at a hospital of head and chest injuries. Eight-year-old Meredith Reid was in critical condition Thursday.

Police said no charges were planned.

Gravel's two other children, ages 11 and 7, were in the truck at the time.

I was out of line telling that person to go to hell. I apologise.

I only try to be a godly person, I don't claim to be one.

Thanks for your prayers. Be sure to ask Jesus to forgive you as well. Goodbye.

Again! I feel bad for the father and I am sure he is in alot of pain right now. It is IMHO it takes alot of leaves to cover 2 entire human beings, maybe next time someone should think of parking somewhere other than a huge pile of leaves where something like a person a pet a tool box might be under

No it is in your NOT so humble opinion. See my post 31. You can make up facts that aren't in the story? I can make up BETTER facts that aren't in the story. Why is everyone trying so hard to bear false witness against this guy?

> Parking on top of a bunch of leaves? there's something wrong with this situation

Where I live, there is
a family with a big house
and four young children.

During leaf season,
the kids rake leaves and pile them
on their wide driveway

cause it's easier
to pick them up there. Sometimes
the kids pick 'em up

right away, sometimes
the kids go off and play, and
sometimes the kids play

right there in the leaves.
I'm always frightened because
the Dad parks his trucks

in the driveway, and
sometimes his foreign hired hands
put his trucks away . . .

I can understand
exactly how this awful
accident happened.

Why is everyone trying so hard to bear false witness against this guy?

It's one of the least attractive aspects of humanity. It's called the blame game. It makes people feel better to affix blame.

That is to say, it makes them feel better. Sometimes, like this time, it's particularly hurtful to people who have paid the worst price that could ever be paid for making a mistake.

I don't think it's really a whole lot of leaves. I might just have my kids go out today and do a little test. I have an 8 year old who is big for her age and a twelve year old. Don't ask me why I'm doing this...I guess I just like to know things, lol.

This whole discussion reminds me of the ones where we talk about people who leave babies in the back of cars or on top of cars (in their little baby carriers). I can easily see myself doing something like this, so I always empathize with people who do it. For the longest time after my youngest child was out of a car seat, I would get out of the car and walk away and then get a scary feeling that I'd left a baby in a car seat. Whatever...I guess my point is that it's easy to do what this guy did and honestly, I'd never thought about the fact that someone could be in a pile of leaves EVER in my life. But, I sure will now that I've gotten older and learned a little more.

If the father knew they were there he would not have park in the leaves. The anguish he feels must be monumental.

Maybe were just trying to give a good Peice of Advice for the future "Don't run over a pile of leaves"

No one needed that advice on this thread after they read the story. It's amazing how far people will go to defend their statements.

When you are in a hole, stop digging.

My friend, I have much compassion for people, I am very sorry what this family is going through, but I do have an opinion about things as you do and one is I don't believe people should run over things they cannot see under...

If I met this family I would have the utmost compassion, sympathy I could give them, but we are on a forum discussing this situation and again I will say I don't believe people should run over things they cannot see under..

My Blessings to this family and to you...

The anguish he feels must be monumental.

It will never, never go away. He will question himself and blame himself for all of the days of his life.

But hey, I'm sure he finds some comfort in being told how it's his fault and how stupid he is.

Advice for the future "Don't run over a pile of leaves"

That's not incredibly practical advice. That's a bit like saying, "you should never put your car in reverse", because somebody once backed over their kid. Remember, the next time you back out of a parking space, it's POSSIBLE that someone could have belly-crawled up behind your wheels without you seeing it, so don't you DARE throw that thing in reverse.

I'm willing to withhold judgement on this guy until I know more about the situation - I've already enumerated a number of scenarios where his actions would be reasonable. Apparently, everyone else would rather just assume he's an idiot. Unfortunately, the article gives so few details as to be virtually useless.

I said AFTER they read the story. Then you gave the advice that they couldn't possibly have thought of themselves.

Maybe call the Dad who's daughter is dead, I'm sure he doesn't "get" it yet.

You just keep on diggin'.

Judgement? Idiot? What possible difference could it make if he was stupid? Or unreasonable? Isn't the price he paid high enough?
