METHUEN, Mass. -- A 10-year-old girl was killed when her father parked his truck in a pile of leaves in which she and a friend were hiding, the family said. The other girl was seriously injured.

Family members said 36-year-old construction worker James Gravel did not know he had run over the girls until he got out and heard daughter Natalie calling him.

"She said, 'Daddy, I can't breathe,"' said Gravel's sister, Jennifer Gravel.

Natalie died at a hospital of head and chest injuries. Eight-year-old Meredith Reid was in critical condition Thursday.

Police said no charges were planned.

Gravel's two other children, ages 11 and 7, were in the truck at the time.

oh? so now i'm an old, bitter, pitiful person? geez youse guys are tough:-) oh! and I almost forgot! an activist judge. (They make good money don't they?)

my point is that it was a stupid thing to do. period. and I agree that the penalty for such action shouldn't be the death of your daughter. but in his case it was, sadly.

you are right that it was a simple mistake, but it had tragid consequences and wouldn't have happened had he used his head.

"you're unwilling to consider any situation that would remove the blame from him"

not really, I just haven't heard anything that would make me beleive that parking a vehicle in a pile of leaves is a smart thing to do. I'm open to suggestions though. And I have forgiven my antagonist a long time ago (I sent flowers to her funeral). but whether her car was badly maintained or badly operated, the results on my end would probably have been the same. and the responsibility would have been unchanged. Now that you mention it, I cannot remember her name. Anna something. She was some kinda bigshot state worker - a higher up IIRC. as for his circumstances, he parked his truck on a pile of leaves - which is not a good idea for a number of reasons. I'm sure that he is suffering, and I shall pray for him tonight as well.

you are right that it was a simple mistake, but it had tragid consequences and wouldn't have happened had he used his head.

So his mind wandered and you pointed it out. You must he so happy to have pointed it out to everyone who already knew that. Who cares?

What on earth do you think you have accomplished by this nonsensical line of posts?

But I've got to hand it to you, you sure know how to stick to your points, no matter how irrelevant or hurtful they may be. Defend your mistake, no matter how long or tortured it gets.

BTW, no one in their right minds believes you don't make hundreds of mistakes everyday which don't result in a damn thing happening to anyone, but heaven help you if one ever harms anyone. One can only hope you don't get called an idiot while in the midst of inconsolable grief.

If you would read the thread before posting your tacky comment, you might learn something.

I'd never thought about the fact that someone could be in a pile of leaves EVER in my life

It's not something I'd have thought about either, now that my kids are older. But my 11 and 12yo sons still love to play hide and seek and they're small for their ages, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they tried hiding in a leaf pile, even in the driveway. Kids don't think about "what if" scenarios.

My boys won't do it now, though, Lord willing, because we talked about this tragedy and prayed together for this family.

it is not a mistake to see an error in judgement. it is your insistance that I am mistaken in this matter that I take exception to. you certainly are entitled to a different opinion of the events described above than I, and you and I have discussed our differences with a minimum of rancor or personal attacks (thank you).

if you are operating a motor vehichle and you mind wanders over changing the radio station and you cause an accident, are you less responsible? Or if you glance too long at the blonde on the sidewalk and rear-end the guy in front of you are you less responsible?

yes, we all make mistakes all day long, and if any of those mistakes causes harm or damage, then we must be held responsible. the aim is for us to be aware of what we're doing, and its' consequences so that we make fewer mistakes.

I'm not sure I understand what you said, lol. "Out" my pic? Did you mean "put" my pic? And if so, on what website? I don't have one. I do know how to put an image in a post on FR, but I just don't have a place to put it so that I can do that.

By the way, the size of this pile of leaves is definitely small enough that *I* would have driven over it without a second thought before today. Maybe you will think diffently. I put my van in the photo for reference.

Apparently you are a member of the "tacky post police"? Go get a life!

He is being held responsible in a way much larger than anything that anyone else could do to him. But it just ain't enough for you. You need to pile on.

Oh well, some people play golf or garden as a hobby, you assign blame. I'm through with this, carry on.

A double whammy. A tearjerker. Losing a child and being unable to avoid the irrational idea that "second sight" should have come into play.

My heartfelt condolences to the family.

um not really. when i'm not writing anything professional i tend to let things slide. plus my fingers aren't as fast as me brain. tough being a genuis.

BTW: I like your tag line collections. reckon i'm getting more libertarian as i age. wonder if it's part of churchill's quote "if you're not a liberal at 20 you have no heart, if you're not conservative at 40 you have no brain" (if you're not libertarian at 60 you have no - something) but I'm nowhere near 60 so that can't be it.

maybe i'm just crochety!
