Boy's KKK Costume Wins Him Award, Suspension

POSTED: 5:50 am EST November 3, 2004

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Michigan high school student's costume is earning an award -- and a suspension. SURVEY Do you believe that this boy should have been suspended? Yes No

Results | Disclaimer

The City High student dressed as a Ku Klux Klansman for the school's Halloween masquerade party. The senior won the prize for the scariest costume and a five-day suspension, too.

Grand Rapids school Superintendent Bert Bleke says the suspension is justified. But he wants to know why the adult chaperones at the party didn't stop the kid from wearing the KKK white-hooded outfit.

The student, who hasn't been named, told The Grand Rapids Press he didn't want to get into anymore trouble by talking about the incident.

I have to wonder, why is it that a kid can dress up like any criminal he wants on Halloween in this country and no one makes a fuss, unless that criminal happens to be very un-PC?

I really didn't expect a response from the angle you just took. Bravo. I agree with you completely.

To me- anything associated with the KKK is chilling.

We have no way of knowing what this kid was thinking- what point he may have been trying to make- but neither he nor anyone else should be surprised at a strong community reaction to a symbol of evil.

If I understand correctly, it is OK to dress as an axe murderer, as Ghenis Khan, or as Adolf Hitler, but not OK to dress as a KKK member? Where does Arab terrorist fit in?

No wonder he is acting out this way. No identity.

His being Asian matters...how?

While his race should not matter, when he is being suspended for a PC crime, it does. Do you think that he would be treated differently if he were white? (I think he would have been beaten.) Would he be treated differently if he were black? In a PC world, he who belongs to the most victimized group wins.

what a silly, mean, stupid, thing to do if its true.. dressing as a KKK murdering piece of trash... Im with the superintendent.. how did he get INTO the room with such on and why was he allowed too??

The problem here is color. If he'd have worn a 'black' hood he would have drawn applause from Superintendent Bert Bleke... who obviously prefers the favorite color of Islamofascist Muzzle-em decapitating murderers !!!

He wanted to dress as a democrat. Apparently he decided to dress like Byrd.

City High? Holy cow, that's the high school that I graduated from!

When I was there, no one would have tried this kind of stunt. Amazing what can change in a few short years.

West Michigan costume ping!

I wonder, would this same Superintendant allow the Planned Parenthood T-shirts to be worn?

My best friend's son had one even better. He dug up a bunch of clothes from the 60's and went as a stoned out hippy. While that is scary enough in itself, he topped it off by wearing a bunch of "I Voted Today" stickers and buttons. Frightened the bejeebers out of us.

When he came to our door trick-or-treating, I almost didn't recognize him. When I asked him about his costume, he said most people didn't get it. Too bad.

I tried to find a picture of Cartman's "scary ghost costume" but failed miserably.
