He should have claimed he was the ghost of a Conehead.

I agree that a lot of responses here are "over the top" in and of themselves. It was a friggin' costume. Halloween costumes are in no way an indication of the wearer's true personality. Otherwise, the logical deduction would be that our society should be overflowing with Jasons, Freddies, vampires, and witches. But it isn't.
Besides, if there was a contest for the scariest costume, then why not wear a costume that goes with the theme of "scary"? But this thought line of "you can be scary, but you cannot offend as single person" amounts to nothing more than enforced, tunnnel-vision political correctness. And seeing the school's reaction -- and the reactions of a lot of posters here -- this is akin to convicting this student of Thought Crime. *SIGH*
As another poster said, what if someone dressed as a terrorist? an axe/chainsaw murderer? A witch (careful for the feeling of the Wiccans)? A druid (same)?
Good grief, there are some who would get offended at anything! And if they WANT to be offended, they will be. Nothing you can do. There are far too many people that seem to exist solely for the purpose of finding something, ANYTHING, at which to be offended. I had thought most of those types were limitted to the masses of whining, pansy liberals. Alas, I see that the perception of a "right to freedom from being offended" has unfortunately infected a lot of those who claim to be on the Right.
But for the "establishment" to enforce subjective and selective political correctness is to be abhorred.

I despise PC'ness.....but we in the South get dogged by this kind of trash all the time....in FACT, where I grew up after moving back in the 8th grade, Fayetteville, NC (Ft Bragg/PopeAFB) there use to be a sign on the edge of town, "Welcome to Fayetteville, this is Klan Kountry" .. now this was there until the late 70's ... I've never hurt a black person in my life, on purpose, nor would I.. anymore that I would ANYONE, unless I was fighting for my life, or that of my family or pet... so I get tired of being accused of having slaves, being a member of the KKK or any other moronic southern label... The South is a wonderful place, I am southern thru and thru, and I cant change history....but it was history and it ticks me off to get dogged about the Confederate Flag.. I LOVE this flag...it was SOUTHERN HISTORY.. it was nothing to be ashamed of and still isnt.....so dont tell me not to dog the Klan and dont tell me I cant LOVE the Confederate Flag, because I do.....
btw.. the NAACP is nothing, but the Klan with a Tan...
