GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Michigan high school student's costume is earning an award -- and a suspension. SURVEY Do you believe that this boy should have been suspended? Yes No

The City High student dressed as a Ku Klux Klansman for the school's Halloween masquerade party. The senior won the prize for the scariest costume and a five-day suspension, too.
Grand Rapids school Superintendent Bert Bleke says the suspension is justified. But he wants to know why the adult chaperones at the party didn't stop the kid from wearing the KKK white-hooded outfit.
The student, who hasn't been named, told The Grand Rapids Press he didn't want to get into anymore trouble by talking about the incident.

Seems over the top to me...Can't really imagine anyone choosing that as a costume.
His being Asian matters...how?
Sickos.
It's a tragedy when parents don't name their kids. A terrible burden for the child to bear throughout life.....
I agree with Housewife101...over the top.
what a silly, mean, stupid, thing to do if its true.. dressing as a KKK murdering piece of trash... Im with the superintendent.. how did he get INTO the room with such on and why was he allowed too??
People go around eager to be offended, because this gives them a chance to affect a very prominent sense of righteous outrage:
I'm outraged, and therefore I am a very caring person!
The local paper reports that the boy is ASIAN!
reminds me of the Chappelle skit.
this kid should be serving his suspension from a hospital bed.
I agree it was very inappropriate.
I know it was "scariest costume", but still.
I do however think a five day suspension is steep especially if he was trying to prove a point.
a costume is a costume - what is wrong with a kkk - or ghengis kahn - or Malcom-x?? to some, a ghost is anti-religiuous - a witch? does not the Bible say "suffer not a witch to live" ?? But is a costume the same?
Pick one.
Would he be suspended if he came as Malcom X ?
What an idiot. It's too bad suspension is all he will get (1st amendment and all). Pinhead.
Damn! where am I?? in the halls of the DU ?
What is with you people who are damning this kid to hell for wearing a costume?
You sound like a gaggle of leftist/PC newyork lawyers. I hope that NONE of you have children, and if so, I pity their miserable lives.
LOL!!!!!
You're implying that it shouldn't matter, and I agree.
An important part of the new balkanization of the US comes in the idea that people's appeal or lack thereof comes from their native membership as part of some ethnic subgroup; "I like Jenny because she's hispanic": "I dislike Johnny because he's anglo-saxon and lacks 'soul'."
You can criticize an ethnic group if you're part of it, and if you're not, well, you'd better keep mum.
On the rare occaisions that I hear my co-workers voice an ethnic joke --let's say it's about Phillipinos, for example, they'll delicately preface their words with the disclaimer, "I can tell this joke because I'm 25% Phillipino, you know..."
People think he's asianness should take away from the offence, because, the thinking goes, he couldn't possibly subscribe to KKK ideology.
