OK, sure, better to knock off the execrable Daschle than the mannikin-like Johnson. But I wouldn't have traded the 2002 loss for the mere possibility of this 2004 win. (Partly because I don't know whom else the GOP in SD had, besides then-he'd-be-a-Senator-already John Thune, to run against Daschle.)

He needs to do a better job of recruiting quality candidates to run. Reichert was pretty good, but I would have preferred Diane Telebius or Luke Esser.

My first preference was Luke too, but at least we got Reichert. I think he'll do fine.

I would agree. I worked on Joe Marine's 21st District State Rep campaign and his run for Congress. He got crushed...I was disappointed, but not surprised. I was surprised that the GOP could not recruit a more seasoned veteran. We would need to get a mayor or county councilman to run. I was impressed that the 8th could get 4 seasoned people to run (true it was an open contest) and the 1st got a virtual no name.

I hate to sound naive here, but can you help me understand how it is that they can tell us that they had 800,000 absentee votes to count as of last night - so they can't tell us who are gov. is yet - but they were able to definitively state that Kerry won in WA (K - 1,166,484 vs B - 1,002,546) and that Nethercutt LOST (N - 926,936 vs M - 1,202,542)

How can they do that? If the number of absentees exceeds the win percentage - than - they shouldn't be able to call it - we only have a few mass lib hubs - so approximately 600,000 votes are coming from heavily conservative areas. WHAT GIVES??

The news has shown lists of the absentee ballots and which county they are coming from, but the list is too long to write down while it's on the screen. I can't find a breakdown anywhere online - except a really vague one on NWCN's site. Have you seen anything? With Rossi ahead in all but 8 counties statewide, it seems like we could get a pretty good idea. The NWCN article said that Rossi is cleaning out his garage, while Gregoires people said they remain "cautiously optimistic" after Thursdays counts brought Dino up a bit.

I was thinking that states should adopt an electoral system for there counties the same way the federal system does for the states...large counties seem to have too much direct influence over the smaller counties. To have 3 counties overwhelm the other 36 counties in a state is just unfair!

It does create a lot of bitterness -- some of which you can get a sense for on this thread. The counties of central and eastern Washington, and even to some extent southwestern Washington, feel not connection whatsoever to the Puget Sound Megalopolis. They're as different as chalk and cheese. In some ways it's a perfect microcosm of our nation as a whole. If some kind of break between areas ever comes, you will see this state split apart just like Virginia did in 1861.
