Forget Florida, forget Ohio, and forget the Upper Midwest. Bush's biggest popular-vote gain are in states where both Gore and Kerry ran the strongest. It is the biggest irony and most unreported (so far) analysis of the popular vote.
I'm not saying that Mother Angelica (heard of her, anyone?) contributed money or made a political endorsement. I'm speaking of the observant Catholic voters, whom I call the Mother Angelica voters. Their support is the cornerstone of Bush's 3.6 million lead in the popular vote. The 2000 & 2004 popular vote margins in the below-listed states are displayed:
NEW YORK: Gore Plurality-1,704,323; Kerry Plurality-1,182,691
CALIFORNIA: Gore Plurality-1,293994; Kerry Plurality-1,023,560
NEW JERSEY: Gore Plurality-504,677; Kerry Plurality-211,826
CONNECTICUT: Gore Plurality-254,921; Kerry Plurality-161,423
RHODE ISLAND: Gore Plurality-118,953; Kerry Plurality-85,626
HAWAII: Gore Plurality-67,441; Kerry Plurality-37,996
Much has been made of the Evangelical Protestant voters. And they certainly made their contribution (particularly in U.S. Senate races). But very few such voters live in these states. Most of the people in these states who attend church every Sunday are Catholic. Clearly, they increased their support for Bush in great numbers. A fair number of them had suppored Gore in 2000. But the combination of partial-birth abortion, stem cell research, and cloning experiments struck these voters as a trifecta of evil, and they responded accordingly. Gay marriage and Ten Commandments displays were also a factor. Militant leftists have tried to use the Democratic Party to impose these policies on an unwilling public, and on November 2, 2004, it blew up in their faces.
Sweet story.
I think Catholic voters have long been asleep in the County. They haven't really had an electoral identity since Kennedy. Instead they have voted on social welfare or labor issues in large part.
I think this year Kerry really energized to the people to examine their hearts and decide that they could not countenance voting for such a man.
I also think we are at the beginning of a Catholic renaissance in this country. The congregants have had quite enough of Amchurch nonsense and are becoming energized.
What about Ocean county (Lakewood)?
Turnout increased 6% overall, and the President's 51/49 lead in 2000 widened to a 61/39 lead in 2004.
I cannot get granular enough data, but I am sure that Orthodox Jews, evangelical Christians and conservative Catholics were an important factor in this.
The fast-growing areas of Dover township apparently had rock-hard turnout and that is Bush country. Likewise Tuckerton.
I also forgot to thank Karl Keating who produced an excellent voters guide...
She's incapacitated, to what degree I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that she is unable to speak.
She voted yesterday. I went to the EWTN website and they have pics of her voting.
Way to go EWTN! I noticed a lovely icon sitting on the Bush family's end table in a photograph from yesterday. :)
She suffered a double stroke 3 years ago and is often confined to a wheelchair. She can speak! In fact, EWTN feature's Mother reciting the Rosary, each night at 9:30.
God Bless EWTN and the Catholics who were not fooled by Kerry!
Glad to hear it 8-)
How bad of a candidate are you when you're less popular than alGore?
God blessed America again last night and I am so thankful.
AB:"I doubt she'd be offended."
I doubt it too. While not a Catholic myself, I have seen an occasional episode of Mother Angelica Live Classics, and she does possess quite a knack for humor among other qualities.
She can speak, but the one side of her face is paralyzed. I remember she was wearing an eyepatch for a time, but I haven't seen her wearing that lately. I would imagine that was because of the fact the muscles on that side of the face were unable to move.
In the states I listed on this posting alone, Bush had a NET GAIN of 1,241,187 votes.
Fascinating. Have you emailed the RNC?
Thank the Lord for Mother, EWTN, and those Catholics who remained true to their faith and voted Kerry down.
God bless them all.
'Although we couldn't capture NJ we came much closer than anyone thought.'
You made a magnificent contribution toward giving Bush a popular vote victory which is what pundits are now citing as decisive and irrefutable. Great job!
