"It's definitely the war," said Eliana Deutsch, 20, of San Diego, explaining why she came out. "People see these soldiers who are 18 and don't have an education, and they're over there dying. It's really sad that that (the military) is their best option."
This makes me irate. What a spoiled brat. Most of our service men are highly educated (ever heard of West Point?) I had several close friends in college who CHOSE to join the military. I think it is an intelligent, BRAVE choice to join the service. I am just lost for words right now. What nerve....and she is not much younger than me. Sickening.
1. He wanted to give something back to a country that allowed such freedom of speech and religion as we have.
2. He could be productive to his country and society right out of high school.
3. He would get money for college.
4. He will learn job skills immediately while getting paid for it.
5. Eventually he will be the guardian of his younger sister (2 yrs old) who is Downs syndrom, and he will be able to provide for her care after their parents are gone.
He came to talk to us several months ago about his decision, and I was impressed that an 18 year old exhibited such maturity. I am proud of him and so thankful that he and thousands like him volunteer to defend this country and keep it safe. That 20-year old nitwit from San Diego may someday realize that it is a Marine like my son's friend who guarantees her right to speak her mind.

This is pathetic. I don't think our soldiers want your sympathy, woman - just your support. She makes our soldiers sound like these hapless, hopeless victims who have no choice - they are forced to leave their homes, serve and die. She denies them all the HONOR and RESPECT due them because they have chosen to leave their families and risk their lives to keep us all safe.
And if this were how she really felt - she should have the same overwhelming sympathy for our veterans. 10:1 she don't...
I guess I should just clarify my statement.
I can only speak for what I saw in the 90's army infantry enlisted.....and us Sarnts and Sarnt wannabes did not have college degrees...most of us.
That may have changed since I separated....and the other MOSs and branches of service are probably much different.
America is made with men like these. God bless your son's friend.
Yes -- many of the officers and enlisted men/women have had educations, but how many of the unlisted -- right our of high school---- have we seen interviewed during the two fronts of this war, who are bright, articulate, and wonderful examples of our youth?
This girl needs her own special class.
Your also refused entry if you have a criminal record. I got my education in the USN. Learned how fix $56,000,000 airplanes and now in civilian life, hold an engineering position without holding an engineering degree.
Really? Not that I doubt your word, but I was told otherwise.
she's an ignoramous.
What an ignorant, social bigoted twit! Bet she thinks she is really smart, reads thick books and looks down on people who get their hands dirty.
Idiot.
Please tell Eliana for me that when I was a poor boy attending West Point in the late 60's - I was taught the following: "Some people remain silent and are thought to be ignorant, while some others speak and take away all doubt! Eliana should get a little experience in the world before offering her misguided utterances.
Oh yeah, I also worked on the Space Shuttle for 3.5 years. I qualified for the job based on my Navy education.
Don't worry about your friend. He would consider the source of those assinine words from a silly young woman who has no clue of what she speaks. God bless your friend. We're USAFA but....we love West Point and Annapolis. j :)
Not only a high school certificate, but they prefer several years of college under your belt and send you to lots of classes after you get in -- depending upon your job. My nephew-in-law has a degree in Civil Engineering and joined the Air Force. THese are sharp guys.
I suspect that the young lady quoted certainly has rather an insular education herself.
[[And don't forget, the Navy needs chiefs more then it needs 36 year old JOs.]]
It doesn't hurt me to admit that you're right. We all know who really runs things... and it's exactly the people this girl has no faith in. It makes me feel a lot better knowing who's really in charge.
yes Churchill said that- and he is full of crap. Human beings are capable of thought long before their twenties. My daughters (ten and eleven years old) have got it figured out. They had a tough several months going to school in liberal Illinois and listening to an overwhelming majority of classmates spout Democrat talking points. All the mock elections went hugely for Kerry. They took major heat for being in such a small minority. But my girls gave it right back!
I'll tell you what- they have never been so eager and excited to get to school as they were this morning!! This is a fabulous day.
