Investigation Into Missing Propane Tanks Spurs FBI Probe (Denver, CO - 11/8/04)
POSTED: 8:53 am MST November 8, 2004 UPDATED: 9:12 am MST November 8, 2004 DENVER -- Members of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force are alerting their counterparts across the country to check for thefts of liquid propane after dozens of cylinders were discovered missing in Denver. An investigation by 7NEWS reveals that about 100 of the 33-pound propane cylinders have been stolen since July. None of them have been recovered.
Mountain West Printing plant manager Bob Fridlund told 7NEWS that he lost seven cylinders in two different thefts, but police didn't seem concerned. Another large supplier -- Suburban Propane -- has had 34 cylinders stolen in the last 90 days.
FBI special agent Monique Kelso said the stolen propane poses a grave threat if it gets into the wrong hands. The stolen cylinders -- larger than those used for a barbecue grill -- produce propane for forklifts and other commercial uses. The propane in one cylinder can destroy a small building.
Earlier this year, the FBI said highly flammable propane was one of the very elements that terrorists have been trained to use. FBI officials are urging anyone who spots such cylinders in a place where they shouldn't be to contact their office in Denver.

FBI investigating Denver propane thefts
11/8/2004, 3:29 p.m. ET
The Associated Press
DENVER (AP) The FBI is investigating the reported thefts of scores of propane cylinders in the Denver area a crime spree that has raised fears of a terrorist attack.
About 100 cylinders, each containing about 7.8 gallons of the highly flammable gas and weighing about 33 pounds, have been stolen from various businesses since July, FBI agent Monique Kelso said Monday.
The investigation was first reported by KMGH-TV in Denver.
"The potential threat is that these propane tanks get into the wrong hands ... and get into the hands of those that are willing to commit a crime on the magnitude of the Oklahoma City bombing or another terrorist attack," Kelso told the station.
She said Monday the tanks might also have been taken to power equipment such as farm machinery. The tanks are larger than those used for barbecue grills.
Twenty-eight propane cylinders have been stolen from Dal-Tile Corp. of Denver, including 10 in the past six months, said Randy Warren, operations manager at the ceramic tile manufacturer.
"Why are they so adamant in cutting a lock, cutting chains, trying to rip the doors off or whatever it is to get to these?" he asked.
