COLUMNIST SAYS PUBLIC SCHOOL PROMOTING ISLAM SHOULD BE SUED
AGAPE PRESS.ORG ^ | NOVEMBER 3, 2004 | JIM BROWN
Posted on 11/06/2004 6:39:38 PM MST by CHARLITE
(AgapePress) - A freelance writer from Virginia is protesting what he calls the Islamic indoctrination of grade school students in one of the country's largest public school districts.
During the ongoing month of Ramadan, children in the third through fifth grades in Herndon, Virginia, schools are being taught about the Muslim holiday and about other Islamic customs and practices.
With the help of so-called "multicultural trainer" Afeefa Syeed," the young students are reciting Muslims' sacred words and imitating their faith practices."
Prayer rugs are given out, Islamic prayers are recited,
and as columnist Dave Gibson recently commented, "a happy face is put on the most dangerous religion the world has ever known."
Gibson, who writes for AmericanDaily.com, is outraged that the Fairfax County school district prohibits recitation of the Lord's Prayer but encourages students to pray to Allah.
"We have chased those Christian ideals out of our school system, and now we're bringing in Muslim ideals.
"It's most troubling that these children are not being given the whole story -- the true face of Islam."
The conservative columnist says secularists who want God removed entirely from schools are also noticeably silent about the Islamic indoctrination occurring in the Virginia public school system.
Where, he wonders, are the American Civil Liberties Union lawsuits and the public indignation so often unleashed on any expression of Christian faith in the public schools?
"What angers me," Gibson remarks, "is the ACLU has not been heard from on this. I can guarantee you, if someone had brought in Christian Bibles or wanted to teach about Judeo-Christian beliefs, the Herndon school district would be sued immediately."
Instead of showing indifference toward the brainwashing of their children, Gibson says Herndon parents should be pulling their kids out of the city's schools and suing the school district over its Islamic indoctrination program. Jack Dale, chief of Fairfax County Schools, declined to comment

Arafat's final wishes likely to be denied; P.M. meets with factions
BY CHRISTINE SPOLAR
Chicago Tribune
Instead, the Israelis suggested Arafat be laid to rest in Gaza in a tiny family grave that, as dozens of Palestinians found out Saturday, offers their storied leader little glory.
Any new plot would be crammed in among 32 existing graves, including those of Arafat's father and sister. The cemetery is behind a locked gate along an open market street in Khan Yunis that is abuzz with hawkers, braying donkeys and swarms of flies.
"I'm not a supporter of Arafat. I'm even part of the opposition. But shouldn't there be respect for where he wants to be buried?" asked Helmi Muhammed, an engineer who sneaked a peek at the white-granite graves of Arafat's father and sister.
"Arafat had the desire to be buried in Jerusalem. It's not the right of the Israelis to refuse him," said Mohammed Faris, a 40-year-old teacher drawn into the discussion around the grave markers littered with empty plastic soda bottles and torn candy wrappers.
Talk of Arafat's burial was deemed too sensitive by many Palestinian officials in Gaza, who shied away from discussing contingency plans. Hostile remarks about Arafat's demise from Israeli officials, in particular a statement Friday from Justice Minister Yosef Lapid, were described as inappropriate and racially divisive.

"There are no malignancies. There is nothing of any sort wrong with his bone marrow or his brain. We have no diagnosis for what is wrong with him. The doctors are investigating everything once, twice, three times," Shaath added.
Leila Shahid, the Palestinian envoy to France, said Arafat was in a coma. She suggested it occurred after he was put under anesthesia to have additional medical tests, including an endoscopy, colonoscopy and a biopsy of the spinal cord, the AP reported.
Endoscopy and colonoscopy, in which a camera is inserted through the throat or into the colon to inspect the intestine, involves sedation but not a general anesthetic, which would induce unconsciousness. However, a spinal cord biopsy is often done under general anesthesia.
If anesthesia is the sole cause of Arafat's coma, it is likely he will recover once the anesthetic wears off, brain expert Dr. Eric Braverman, director of the PATH Medical Foundation in New York, told AP. However, if the coma is the result of serious medical problems, the chances of recovery are smaller, Braverman said.

Key words 'exploded prematurely'
West Bank car blast kills two
From correspondents in Qalqilya, West Bank
07nov04
A CAR exploded in the West Bank today, killing two Palestinians and critically wounding a third, witnesses and medical sources said.
The identities of the casualties in the blast in Qalqilya town were not immediately known.
Dozens of Palestinian militants waging a four-year-old uprising against Israel have been killed when bombs they were assembling or transporting exploded prematurely.

FYI...a national program and a national plan
Palestinian PM holds talks with Islamic groups
Qureia arrived in Gaza under heavy guard and accompanied by Parliament Speaker Rauhi Fattouh, who would step in as a caretaker president of the Palestinian Authority. The men did not comment to reporters.
Eight vehicles full of security forces joined his motorcade, roads were closed, and dozens of Palestinian police guarded the area. In his year as prime minister, Qureia has traveled to the volatile Gaza Strip only two or three times.
The situation is particularly delicate in Gaza, where rival groups of gunmen and security officials have fought each other in the streets, jockeying for power ahead of Israel's planned withdrawal from the coastal strip in 2005.
Qureia's first meeting consisted of leaders of the Islamic groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as chiefs of the competing Palestinian security forces in Gaza.
After the meeting, Qureia said the security commanders had committed to a "joint security plan ... to ensure security and order."
He said the Islamic groups "reiterated the importance" of working together with the Palestinian government "to reach a national program and a national plan and to achieve a political partnership."

Washington: State Department sets up prayer room for Muslims
Hey, that's swell. I can't wait to pray in the new State Department chapel for Christians.
What's that you say? There is no such place? How's that again? Establishment clause, you say? What's that?
From AP, with thanks to Ali Dashti:
WASHINGTON In a gesture to Muslims, the State Department on Thursday set up a prayer room for some 150 guests invited to dinner by Secretary of State Colin Powell to end their daylight Ramadan fast.
Rugs were placed in the well-furnished room off to the side of the Ben Franklin dining room so the Muslims could observe the call to prayer that traditionally precedes the end of fasting at nightfall.
Afterward, the Muslims, men and women sitting side by side, dined on lamb and chicken and were assured by Powell that "we will move aggressively forward to deal with the Middle East peace process and with terrorism."
"In the United States you will find no better friend and partner," Powell said.
Offering a brief civics lesson, Powell told them "you saw American democracy in action" on election day. And, he said, "we air our differences openly."
Powell also said "America is open to all," but because of security concerns "we have caused some inconvenience for travelers."
It was the third consecutive year Powell marked the religious event with an Iftar dinner at the State Department, and each year a prayer room was made available, department protocol officials said.
