The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Arafat Aide Claims He Is Not in Coma

By LARA SUKHTIAN

CLAMART, France - Yasser Arafat was not in a coma but remained in intensive care Saturday after undergoing more medical tests, a senior aide to the ailing Palestinian leader said. Test results were expected within days.

Nabil Abu Rdeneh, Arafat's spokesman, would not say whether his announcement meant Arafat had emerged from a coma or whether he had not been comatose at all. He also refused to say whether he saw Arafat personally, and he did not specify the nature of the new medical tests.

Qureia asks Hamas to halt attacks in Arafat's absence

By Arnon Regular and Roni Singer, Haaretz Correspondents, and Agencies

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia (Abu Ala) on Saturday asked Hamas leaders in the Gaza Strip to refrain from launching terrorist attacks in Israel in the absence of Yasser Arafat.

snip...

After a long time in which Qureia refrained from visiting the Gaza Strip, on Saturday he held a four-hour meeting with the heads of the security organizations and representatives of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other groups, and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Qureia told them that there is no improvement in Arafat's condition and that he would not respond to the demand to set up a united national leadership, although he promised to study the matter.

In Arafat's absence, the various groups are advancing the joint leadership idea, which will give them greater power than before.

snip...

In addition to Suha and Farouk Kadoumi, the only surviving Fatah founder, four other senior PA leaders are in Paris - Mohammed Dahlan; Dr. Ramzi Khouri, Arafat's bureau chief; spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh; and Arafat's confidant Mohammed Rashid. Nasser Al-Kidwa, Arafat's nephew and PLO UN representative, and Palestinian millionaire Munib al-Masri are also there. The entourage is divided into two camps. Suha and Kadoumi head one camp against Rashid and Abu Rudeina. The tension and rivalry between Suha and the leadership around Arafat have been going on for awhile. One of the reasons Abbas and other senior officials refused to accompany Arafat to Paris was their reluctance to meet Suha, who is taking advantage of the French law giving the wife the authority to decide who will stay beside the husband's bed.

The fights between Suha and the Palestinian senior officials focus, among other things, on financial matters. Suha got some of her cronies to get tenders and franchises in PLO and PA deals, against the will of Arafat's people. She accused them of corruption, while they accused her of using her status to advance her cronies' interests.

Some of these accusations led to legal suits abroad and were among the reasons for Suha's leaving the territories. Rashid mediated between Suha and PA officials and managed to reach financial compromise arrangements with her. In recent years, Suha claimed that she and her daughter Zauwa were not receiving enough money to live on. Arafat's confidants, however, leaked reports of huge sums of money that were transferred to her hands.

Why has not Suha offered her daughter, Zauwa, for suicide-murder yet?

You know you just can't make this stuff up...

Legacy of chaos in dying hours of Arafat era

As doctors battled to find out what caused a sudden deterioration in his health, his political and personal affairs were in a mess. He left no obvious successor and the power vacuum threatens to give Islamic militants the upper hand in Palestine.

Even the details of funeral arrangements are the subject of bitter backroom disputes between the Palestinian authorities and the Israelis. Who should be invited to the funeral and, most sensitively, where he would be buried are all hotly disputed?

The Palestinian leadership last night put pressure on radical militant groups in Gaza to agree to a declaration of unity. Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia met some 13 factions including Islamic Jihad and Hamas in Ramallah seeking an agreement not to create civil disorder as the leadership confronts one of its biggest crises in years.

snip

Achieving that would cast doubt on diplomacy with Israel and its US ally, given that the militants seek the eventual destruction of the Jewish state.

Sami Abu Zuhri of the militant group Hamas said: "Our demand is to form a unified leadership. Under the circumstances and deterioration in the condition of Mr Yasser Arafat, certainly this demand has become more urgent and more important.

"There is no room to talk about stopping any form of resistance against the enemy as long as the occupation and aggression continue."

snip

With Sharon refusing outright to allow Arafat to be buried in Jerusalem, the pressure is on to solve the issue quickly since under Islamic law, once a person dies, he must be buried within 24 hours.

As well, with a number of world leaders expected to attend a funeral, including those from countries with no diplomatic relations with Israel, Israeli officials are all the more determined that the Palestinian leader be buried elsewhere, preferably at a family burial plot in the Gaza town of Khan Yunis where his sister is buried.

"They [the Palestinians] will choose where to bury him, but he will not be buried in Jerusalem because Jerusalem is the city where Jewish kings are buried and not Arab terrorists," Israeli justice minister Yosef Lapid said.

But, according to Ikrema Sabrisaid, the most senior Muslim cleric in Jerusalem, Arafat had told him during a meeting four months ago that his wish was to be buried "in a place that is close to the Al Aqsa Mosque".

Located in central Jerusalem, on the sacred hill known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif and to Christians and Jews as the Temple Mount, the Al Aqsa compound is Islam’s third holiest shrine. The Temple Mount is revered by Jews as the site of the biblical Jewish temples.

Thanks! It's one of those that shouldn't bother me but is. So here's a little comic relief from another FR thread...

One sunny day in 2005 an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He went up to the U.S. Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Kerry." The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Kerry is not the president, he did not win the election and he doesn't reside here." The old man said, "Okay" and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Kerry." The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Kerry is not the president and doesn't reside here." The man thanked him and walked away.

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same U. S. Marine, saying, "I would like to go in and meet with President Kerry." The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said,

"Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Kerry. I've told you already that Mr. Kerry is not the president and doesn't reside here. Don't you understand?"

The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow."
