When will we start getting election results in?

Posted on 11/01/2004 5:41:41 PM PST by stuck_in_new_orleans

At what time do the polls close on the east coast?

And what time do they start announcing the winners, and do they usually announce the winner the minute after the polls close? I know state races for govenor and senator they will keepa running tally for a hour or so, do they do that in Presidental elections or do they just blurt out "The poll in ____ just closed and ____ is the projected winner"???

sorry, but im young and although not new to voting, I never followed it this closely....thanks!

First poll closes 6 PM EST in Indiana and Kentucky. Look for the scoreboard to light up FIRST for Bush and hopefully by the time the states west of the Mississippi start coming in Bush will already have his 270 votes.

Notes

Polling places in states that span multiple time zones will close either synchronously or asynchronously.

  • (Note *S) With synchronized closing, all the polls close at the same GMT/UTC time. When polls close in the advanced local time zone, they will close one hour earlier in the lagging local time zone.
  • (Note *A) With asynchronous closing, the polls close at different GMT/UTC times in different parts of the state. Media outlets might decide to declare a winner before all the polls have closed.

At 7pm Eastern Time, Kentucky and Indiana will be the first states announced. At 8 pm the East coast state precincts close and it goes from there.

If Kerry's winning in Florida, it'll be then, even if the polls haven't closed. Look for CBS to report first if that's the case.

With the Nov. 10th military and overseas extension, it could take a week, right?

Check right after midnight in Dix, N. H., they usually cast the first votes, all 30 of them.
But don't be looking for a trend.

Indiana & Kentucky will report first, and they'll go big for Bush. Of course, the press will still hold off calling either state for Bush for hours. But if the first 0.3% of the vote from Florida has Kerry up by 2 votes, CBS will call Florida for Kerry.
