EAST ST. LOUIS - Carl Officer, the four-term mayor of East St. Louis, Illinois, announced before local supporters today that he has accepted the position as head of the Illinois Steering Committee of "Democrats for Bush," founded earlier this year by Democratic Senator Zell Miller of Georgia.
A life-long Democrat, Officer is a third generation African-American entrepreneur with a family funeral home business and mayor of one of the poorest cities in Illinois and, for that matter, America.
Officer was once a top aide to Secretary of State Alan Dixon, a Democrat who later served as a U.S. Senator from Illinois before being defeated in a 1992 primary by Carol Moseley-Braun.
Officer was welcomed into the organization by a personal congratulatory phone call from Brian Lunde, National Executive Director of "Democrats for Bush."
"I watched the debates intently, especially to try to measure the strength of each man and compare how each would face the awesome responsibility of America's safety -- a President's #1 priority, said Officer. "As a relatively new father, I indulged my three-year old daughter and let her stay up with me as I watched. When it was over, and I looked into her eyes, I knew I had to go with the proven product, and I believe on the issue of protecting Americans first, nearly everyone agrees George Bush is the leader by far."
Officer's endorsement comes on the heels of national reports that Bush's support among African-Americans may double in number from his vote totals among this demographic in 2000.
In breaking with his party on the Presidential race, Officer, an ordained minister, cited serious differences he has with the Democratic leadership on issues like gay marriage and abortion.
East St. Louis is a majority African-American city of approximately 31,000 residents located in St. Clair County in what is commonly referred to as the "Metro East" region of Illinois.
Beautiful response from the mayor.
Someone from East St. Louis!?!?!?! For Bush??? Pigs are flying by my window as I type.....
Are you familiar with Carl Officer? If he is doing this, someone is paying him.
No I'm not aware of who he is.
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
Many, many more miracles... like dead republicans turning out to counter the large numbers of dead democRATS who always manage to vote in Illinois.
blame the flying pigs on the Red Sox. We really need a Mayor or Minister from East Cleveland to do the same for W.
His family operated funeral homes in East St. Louis for years. It was about the only profitable business there other than liquor stores. The city had nothing, but Officer drove around in big cars with a gaggle of body guards. He robbed the place blind. If I recall correctly, he was ultimately picked up for speeding while drunk, drugged or both and, by that time, he was such a disaster nothing could help him. After I posted, I thought about the fact that he has a 3 year old and wondered if maybe he hadn't turned his life around. I hope he has.
"I'm afraid the Peoples Socialist Republic of Illinois will need many more miracles."
Ain't it the truth!
The DOORS are in my ears doing "When the Music's Over" LIVE. I always knew black Americans would figure this stuff out when they decided to pay attention!
This is just amazing!
He says this four days before the election? Where was he three months ago? He's a day late and a dollar short, I'd say.
Wow.
most of southern IL is voting republican, it is the north part that is hurting the rest of us in this state.
I've been all over the state the past two months and am convinced that if we could keep the dead from voting in Chicago, Bush would win Illinois. The Burbs are going Bush.
Awesome!
I wished I would've known that before reading the post!
