State Department Tried to Stop Airing of Bin Laden Tape
WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department on Friday urged the government of Qatar, which finances Al-Jazeera, not to broadcast a videotaped speech by Osama bin Laden, a senior State Department official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the State Department spoke to officials in Qatar before Al-Jazeera showed a portion of the tape. In it, the al-Qaida leader said the United States can avoid another attack if it stops threatening the security of Muslims.
The request to the Persian Gulf government, which is considered an ally in the U.S. campaign to counter terror, was passed through the U.S. embassy in Doha, Qatar's capital.
Secretary of State Colin Powell and other Bush administration officials have appeared in Al-Jazeera interviews, although the State Department has occasionally denounced the network as biased against the United States. The reason for going on these programs is to convey the U.S. message to the Arab world, the official said.

Fine, believe your reality. It's not mine, nor the one of most informed people.
yessirreeee! that and the fact that arafat is on his death bed....
Except for that American Airlines jet that blew up after taking off in New York, not too many.
Yes indeed, but only one was shown live on TV while it was happening. I suspect that if a plane hit the WTC, a plane hit the Pentagon and a plane crashed into the ground in PA during the Clinton Admin, the discussion would have been circling around what the unusual variations in Solar radiation may have been that day. With a second plane clearly deliberately flying into the second tower, they guaranteed there would be no way to spin it as anything except a deliberate attack.
Thanks! I'd forgotten that, actually - the scads of articles on the British Afghan wars, dire warnings of how our troops would be decimated by the Muslims, etc. I bet the pressies were really disappointed that none of this happened, but they were probably cheered up by being able to work their magic on Iraq instead.
I don't know about you, but I'm pretty suspicious of that one. The rudder FELL OFF? Come on - most seasoned pilots don't buy that. Pilot error - a pilot, weeks after 9/11, panicked on takeoff enough to tear off the rudder when that's never happened before? Hmmm. Not buying that bridge...
Election day bombings in swing states?
What would we do? Nobody has the authority to cancel elections.
They're moon worshippers.
Ramadan just ended, and we have a full moon phase.
My gut is in a knot.
Rememembr this? http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1189125/posts
Everyone in the State Department should be fired. Start over from Powell on down.
They are one of the most out of control government agencies.
The link wouldn't give me the page, any other way of finding it?

I would say it is only conjecture based on some interesting connections between tapes and attacks on the Cole, and embassies a while back, but the connection has not happened in some time.
Most likely due to anti-terrorism efforts.
There does not have to be a message implicit in the tape. The tape itself can be the go signal, so just announcing that one has been received is sufficient. They do not need to even air it.IMHO
This tape separates the men from the boys.
The boys will vote Kerry, because that's what bin Laden
wants. He hates President Bush and is basically saying,
to anyone listening between the sentences, vote Kerry.
Who else is promising a policy change? Kerry is
promising to clear everything through the UN, and bin Laden
knows the UN despises Uncle Sucker and is a joke.
"OBL is feeling threatened by all this progress."
Possibly, but that only makes him more dangerous.
Hmmm... No mention of Spain, or Iraq, or Libya or Indonesia. Al-Queda is still doing their "Weekend at Bernies" imitation. Bin Laden is buried in a cave in Tora Bora courtesy of the US Air Force, IMHO. Until we see a tape that mentions incidents post Tora Bora, there is no reason to believe otherwise.
Al Qaeda has used bin Laden videos as a trigger for past attacks.
Or it could be, since he couldn't deliver an attack, he delivered a threat.
ok, thanks.
