My wife works for a corporation where one of the board members emailed "everyone all locations" (many offices across the US) about the upcomming election. He indicated that he "hesitated" to share his reccomendation with everyone, but many people have asked him which candidate would be more helpful to the company. He endorsed Kerry and asked everyone to vote.
Is this legal, ethical or just tacky?
That just may be against the law.
Mixing politics and business is ultimately bad for business, find a new company quick :)
That's why they call them "bossmen".
Legal? I don't see why not.
It has a high slime rating.
Is it a private company or corporation?
An answer would depend on many factors.
I told my whole crew if they vote for Kerry they are fired...
Of course they know I am joking, but have no doubt...everyone who works for me knows who I think they should vote for...
Actually converted one today too on the argument that raising the minimum wage is notihing more than a ripoff on the public...cost of pizza and beer go up when you raise the minimum wage.
Most of my crew make between 25 and 60 bucks an hour btw...
It's certainly tacky.
unless there was some sort of veiled ( or obvious ) threat, i'm not sure it breaks the law.
Not like he can monitor how people vote.
(yet)
The boss is certainly able to suggest how everyone should vote--it's legal. This is one of the rare times I've heard of a boss telling his employees to vote Democrat though...
Its the DNC
As long as he doesn't tie continued employment to how people vote and isn't actually pressuring people or persistently asking them how they plan to vote it's annoying, but I don't think it's illegal.
It is inappropriate, but I don't think telling people his opinion, the way it was phrased it is illegal.
But if the boss has a boss, THAT person should be told, because he is not supposed to use company resources for political campaigning.
Is it possible she could email the board member back and ask him why he thinks Kerry would be better for the company? I'd really like to know his reasoning.
Probably legal. Definitely tacky. Not to mention counterproductive. And manipulative. Has he shown such tendencies on other occasions?
just delete the email. it doesn't pay to jeopardize her job. these corporate executives think they are gods, and that the workers are mere serfs with minds full of mush. better to have your wife talk about it at lunch with her co-workers, the arrogance of it, to generate some support for Bush. escalating the issue won't do anything.
Does your wife work for Morgan Stanley?
But it won't make any difference for Kerry. Most workers resent their bosses. It may give Bush more votes.
Tacky.
What kind of company is this? Do they manufacture ketsup?
Can you post what the email said. I'd like to know why he thinks Kerry would be better for his business.
