If Daschle loses, the Dems might be more willing to allow votes

Ken, I think the Democrat position on nominations will be the same, whether they are "led" by Daschle or by someone else. Daschle merely reflects what the other 48 Democrats want.

The rules were changed a while back..the "marathon hold the floor" strategy doesn't exist any more.

You are of course right about that. I'm sorry if my post wasn't very clear on that issue. It is true that a single Senator can not monopolize the floor (they can be limited to 1 hour speeches, twice per day) and that any Senator requesting reconginzion will "eventually" be recongized to speak.

What my post was getting at was that a party could still force extended discussion on an issue. And prevent other issues from coming to the floor. But you are right, a single person can not hold the floor indefinatly.

It's iffy..here's my take, FWIW..if Daschle loses, the GOP gains a few seats..a few things happen..first, the GOP Senate RINO gang of 4 now have Zero influence..a good thing in and of itself..and Frist may be able to get a few more of the Dems to support cloture..to allow the vote...Ben Nelson, Landrieu, the two from Arkansas...60 comes close...the dems might figure it's better to go along, allow the Senate votes, which they'd all lose.. than have the nuclear option pulled on them.....if you take a look at the 2006 election list..Dems are more vulnerable, IMHO, than this year..and in 2006, W will spend ALL his time electing senators...

Landrieu

How will she function without Breaux up there telling her how to do the job? Maybe she will rely on Chris John, the expected freshman senator to coach her. Go Vitter!!

Outside of the minority districts, and inner city offices, the Dem party is about to disappear on the national level in the south..and that will make it harder, if not impossible, for them to field effective state wide candidates for governor and senate races. Arkansas and LA are abberations.. by te end of the decade, the Dems may be incapable of generating an EV majority, or a Senate majority..the only Dem candidates to come out of the south will be minority. Harold Ford will be the one to watch.

A friend of mine had thyroid cancer two years ago. Hers was slow growing, and according to her doctor, quite common and curable. They removed part of her thyroid and put her on meds. no chemo or big deal radiation. Hopefully, Rehnquist's is no worse.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the SCJ...his work is "supremely" important to civilization.

Another reason to re-elect Dubya!

No. If you are in serious condition on Oct 25 you are NOT expected back at work in seven days.

Chief Justice Rehnquist is a good man whose wisdom and integrity are sorely needed on today's Supreme Court. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Prayers going up for Justice Rehnquist's recovery, that the Lord will give him strength, health and clarity of mind until he is relieved of duty.

I hope all conservatives, neos, paleo, all, understand that this election is the most important election in our lifetime that 11/2 will decide our courts for years to come.

I have heard many Conservatives in this Forum and elsewhere speaking out againt the President and expressing that he does not meet their philosophical or fiscal expectations but what we most not forget is the alternative to George W. Bush. The alternative will be dire for this nation for possibly up to 8 years. I pray that all the blinders are taken off and what is at stake can be seen.

I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in 1989, I deliberately waited longer than recommended to have my surgery as I felt like God was going to heal me without surgery. Many, many were praying for me daily. I eventually scheduled the surgery for 5 weeks after I was diagnosed and then canceled the surgery two days before it was scheduled because my tumor had decreased from being easily seen with the naked eye, approx. 5" to 3" around and then to very hard to even feel by a doctor maybe the size of a small olive. I waited another month and prayed and it completely disappeared.

My doctors and surgeon were unable to explain the disappearance of the tumor and with no cancer cells left anywhere. My tumor was so large that it made it difficult to swallow and it was putting pressure on nerves in my ears and causing me pain.

I was not under any treatment, I was diagnosed, went for a second opinion, scanned, tested to determine if it was a "cold" (cancerous) tumor and all the other tests but no treatment. The recommended treatment was removal of the thyroid and then radiation.

I thank God I didn't have to have the surgery but I know a lot of other Christians that have had the surgery and had many praying and who came out well and have lived long productive lives.

Let's pray that CJ Rehnquist's surgery goes well. I wonder why he had a tracheotomy, I've never heard of that?

In a classic filibuster (think "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington") the issue would never be tabled. Thus no other issue can come to the floor until a cloture vote passes. Since the Republicans have a majority they could even prevent an recess vote from passing. If the Democrats really want to filibuster, make them talk for days on end if necessary, but don't let anything else onto the floor. This of course would bring Congress (at least the Senate) to a complete halt, but sooner or later they will have to give in.

The Republicans have been afraid of the MSM and public opinion and to be made to look partisan, difficult, uncaring for the welfare of thenation and like they are trying to abolish abortion and all the other things that the MSM comes up with every time a big decision has to be made.

This time around if we get the Presidency, or even if we don't, the Repubs better make up their minds to fight and not care if they are going to be viewed as disruptors or whatever other label the MSM wants to put on them because the more we wait the less the chances to appoint decent judges,

Karl Rove must be involved in some way. Rehnquist may have actually been on his death bed but has made a deal with the devil (Rove negotiating) to continue to live to cast the deciding vote in ..... (FILL IN THE BLANK).
