ALAMOGORDO — In a town where business marquees proudly welcomed the president on Sunday, George Bush promised a crowd of cheering supporters he would protect the nation's families.
"All progress on every other issue depends on the safety of our citizens," Bush told about 10,000 people gathered in a field at Alamogordo High School. "The terrorists who killed thousands of people are still dangerous and determined to attack us again."
Bush talked for about 35 minutes on family themes and attacked his opponent, Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry, for not understanding the nature of the war on terror.
Bush repeated Kerry's statement that he voted for $87 billion in funding for troop support before he voted against it.
"I've spent quite a bit of time in New Mexico. I've never heard anybody talk that way in this state," Bush said of what he called Kerry's flip-flopping on the issues.

New Mexico is looking good for Bush. The National Guard has always been popular in New Mexico -- New Mexicans don't appreciate the implication that National Guard service is something less than "regular army." We lost the most of any state when our National Guard suffered in the Bataan Death March in WW II.
Just got home from the President Bush Rally in Alamogordo. Great turnout and a good time.

Mine too. I'm just worried that I'm a cheerleader who is only listening to other cheerleaders.

Zogby came in today with the President +5 in NM, with Mason-Dixon previously the same. The ARG poll in between was the usual left-leaning Kerry +2. Still, NM looks like it could possibly be joining the Bush fold next week.
I am also encouraged when I read that President Bush drew around 50,000 at a rally in Florida. They actually had to move the rally to the football stadium because the crowd was so big. Those kind of numbers tell me we're not just preaching to the choir!
I want to encourage all NM'icans to keep working like Bush is down 5 until all the votes are in. The Dems are poised to cheat BIG this year. They got away with it in 2000, and they expect to get away with it again.
Yes, we do tend to be cheerleaders listening to other cheerleaders. But, I think rally turnout is a good indicator of conservative turnout in the election. We're going to beat them with our turnout -- not just by convincing the "undecided," who will probably just toss a mental coin when they get to the booth.

I don't know. I can't remember when the tests were moved to Nevada.
Just one nuclear test in NM. I was in Alamogordo at the time -- we were told an ammunition dump blew up.
