I thought only oboes and bassoons had double reeds.

Bagpipes?

Unless there's something I don't understand about bagpipes, they are not a reed (double or otherwise) instrument at all...

I thought bagpipes work by blowing into an air reservoir (the bag) which in turn provides the air pressure necessary to produce sound out through the various pipes; one of which is actually played by the musician who moves his fingers over the tone holes. The other pipes produce a constant tone.

How are there any reeds in this instrument?

Just a sax player (single reed, thank you) speaking his mind...

The reeds are inside the chanter. You don't actually put them in your mouth while playing the instrument.

"...The reeds are inside the chanter. You don't actually put them in your mouth while playing the instrument....."

OK, thanks for educating me a little. So, the reed(s) are not actually "played" by the player...the sound is formed by forcing air over fixed reeds deep in the bowels of the instrument: fair to say?

Reed instruments, such as sax, clarinet, oboes and such are played by the player actually forming the air column and sound with his own mouth.

I know, it's late. I happen to like bagpipes, by the way....

Thanks for the info. Very interesting! Bird season starts Nov 6 here in Hawaii. We still use lead shot.

If you're using bismuth at $2/round, that's more expensive than .50BMG. I hope you enjoy eating your geese!

Several people have mentioned how clean the retreiver was when they came back. He was as fresh as if he had just had a bath.

I am quite familiar with instruments in the woodwind family. My wife plays, or has played, them all at one time or another, even the flute and piccolo, which of course have no reeds at all. My oldest son also plays the Barritone Saxophone in a small orchestra where he lives.

I can't afford bismuth shot, so I use steel. I have found that an extended range choke tube works really well.

Hah!

Jerry is that you?

I have hunted with this guy, I swear it. Every decoy must be EXACTLY right. Duck and goose hunting is his life. I tried to tell him this is supposed to be FUN.

I have hunted geese. But I am not a "goose hunter." =)

I'm not Jerry, goose hunting is only three months out of the year, and we DO have fun out there. Once in a while I even go FReep our local leftists during lunch, all dressed in camo.
