NEW LONDON, N.H. - Laura Bush said Thursday that Teresa Heinz Kerry didn't need to apologize for saying she couldn't remember whether the first lady had ever had "a real job."
"She apologized but she didn't even really need to apologize," Mrs. Bush told reporters at a coffee shop before attending a rally for President Bush (news - web sites). "I know how tough it is and actually I know those trick questions."
USA Today had asked Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), if she would be different from Mrs. Bush as a first lady.
"Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm, and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good," Heinz Kerry said in the interview published Wednesday. "But I don't know that she's ever had a real job - I mean, since she's been grown up. So her experience and her validation comes from important things, but different things."
Heinz Kerry later said she had forgotten that Mrs. Bush had worked as a teacher and librarian. "There couldn't be a more important job than teaching our children," she said in a statement. "As someone who has been both a full-time mom and full-time in work force, I know we all have valuable experiences that shape who we are. I appreciate and honor Mrs. Bush's service to the country as first lady and am sincerely sorry I had not remembered her important work in the past."
Bush adviser Karen Hughes later criticized Heinz Kerry twice - first for remarks "indicative of an unfortunate mind-set that seeks to divide women based on who works at home and who works outside the home" and later for an apology she called "worse because she left out the very important real job of a mother."
Laura Bush IS the quintessential First Lady.
Any bets on how long it will be, after Kerry loses, that they split ???
I've got ten quatloos on under a year. . .
I couldn't help think about Bill & Hillary Clinton when I read this. I think Hill was always Bill's enabler...she was only interested in the political fortune she could gain by being married to him. And that's why she stuck with him all these years, and turned her eyes on his despicable behavior. And I've no doubt that she's not finished, and will continue to turn her eyes on his sicko behavior if she stands to gain at all politically.
LOL @ the "made her like it" remark!
We should have kept a list of all the things they've had to retract/redact.
These people just CANNOT be allowed anywhere near the White House!
The only way Laura could have made her comment even more perfect would have been to precede her answer with "bless her heart..." - the absolutely Southern way to deliver a stinging compliment.
Laura Bush is FIRST CLASS ! ! !
TerAYza is second class ! ! !
Most everyone here remembers how it felt to have your knuckles rapped by a ruler in grade school.
Anyone want to bet that Tar-Ayyyy-Zah isn't aware of it?
Absolutely priceless! A total Class Act!
Kudos to the First Lady!
Jack.

Ummm, I'm not a betting person Sal - but thanks just the same LOL. I wonder if these two might not just linger on and on "pretending" to be married - you know, like Bill & Hill. I know one thing though - it'll be Mama T's decision, not his. sKerry's love of money is stronger than his pride.
Agreed!
Noooooooo, she is NOT too nice. She is a lady all the way. Think about it this way. Teresa has said and done so many assinine things on the trail that it shows what she is made of. Laura Bush on the other hand presses on with quiet dignity. There is a difference. So, noooooooo, she is NOT too nice. She is sharp as a tack. :)
By the way, I order Dick Morris's 9-11 on Overstock.com last week... I can't wait to get it.
I love that woman. Mr President, ya done real good!
What a classy lady. This just emphasizes Theresa's lack of tact and manners.
Laura Bush ALL CLASS, ALL THE TIME!
Memo to the Bush daughters...
Remember the 2004 campaign; it is giving you MUCH to be proud of.
Great! It's outstanding!
The press raised the issue so it would have been out there. To even be lowered to the level of talking about it is foolish. Should have let the press and the dims blather about it. Mrs. Bush's response was best. The rest should have ignored it. National campaign for the WH and we are talking or debating something so stupid? It's a bad move
