If it were a boxing match, they would have thrown in the towel. If it were a Little League game, they would have invoked the mercy rule. Unfortunately for hapless Kerry spokesman Mike McCurry, no such refuge was available, and he had to suffer a relentless, devastating, take-no-prisoners, never-back-down pounding at the hands of Liz Cheney, daughter of the Vice President. Wow! What a star was just [at least for this viewer] born. Where has she been?
Sometimes shows like Today concoct a theme for an interview and try to force their square guests into the round hole they have conceived. The topic today was the notion that both campaigns were exploiting the politics of fear.
But Liz would have none of it. "This isn't about trying to scare people. We are truly at war. This is about who has the strong leadership to win that war. Of course Kerry is forced to make tough statements now, but his words are contradicted by his record."
She continued: "Kerry has been on the wrong side of every major national policy issue over the last 20 years, from cutting $7 billion in intelligence after the WTC was bombed for the first time, to voting against the 1991 Gulf War, to opposing most of the weapons systems used to fight the war on terror."
Before describing McCurry's remarks, a few words about his looks. I don't know if he might be a baseball fan who stayed up to watch the game, or whether he was up all night putting out the fires from Teresa's "my experience is bigger than hers" gaffe, or whether it is simply the wear and tear of a long campaign, but I have never, NEVER, seen a political aide look this palpably tired on national TV.
Not only was his face haggard, but his eyes were so red-rimmed that one had to wonder if he had been on a crying jag. One thing is clear: being inside the Kerry campaign nowadays ain't a bowl of cherries.
In any case, McC claimed that "we took our eyes off the terrorists to divert to go to war in Iraq that is now causing so much pain. We can't go on with more of the same and need to change directions."
But soon it was back to Liz on the attack: "The 9/11 Commission found we're not safe, but we're safer than we were before 9/11. But with his talk of global tests and describing terrorism as a nuisance, one has to question whether Kerry really understands nature of challenge we face."
Katie tried to put Liz on the spot, quoting her father to the effect that the country could be more vulnerable to attack if Kerry were elected. If Couric thought that would put Liz on the defensive, she was badly mistaken. Liz didn't back down for a second: "Weakness invites attack. The policies Kerry/Edwards propose would take us back to 90s when we treated terrorism as a law enforcement and intellignece matter. They have sent signals of wavering."
When McCurry tried some wan retort, Liz cut him off at the knees: "The record doesn't match the rhetoric, Mike, the record doesn't match rhetoric."
Even when a defeated McCurry, on his knees, begging for mercy, tried to AGREE with Liz, she would give no quarter. By the end, McCurry was pitiably saying that when it comes to the need to pay attention to terror threats, "we agree about that."
"No, we disagree," retorted Liz!
This was the most lopsided, devastating rhetorical victory I have ever seen on Today. It made last night's sad [for this Yankees fan] shellacking look like a nail-biting cliffhanger.
Bravo, Liz, you are my new hero! Let's see more of her along the trail!
Very well put!
I've noticed that also ... they did it the other day when Dr. Susan Rice was being interviewed on FNC
Speaking of Edwards ... Ted Koppel did a follow around Edwards interview last night ... at the end of the show Edwards 5 yr old son Jack was on and Ted asked him if Jack wanted to tell the viewers who they should vote for .. after a little pause and prodding, Jack says daddy ... then Jack says "Bush is Dumb" ..
Ain't he just cute .. I wonder where he learned that from
LOL -- habet! Good one. Count me among the old duffers growling "what is she doing down there on the sidelines/in the locker room?"
I just hate Kerry's clenched fist.
Too bad, huh?
"a stay-at-home mom"
that's not possible then, you have no life experiences and you don't have a REAL job.. all you do is watch children. :(
I'm a stay at home mom too and THK's remarks yesterday irked me! Also I am a certified teacher who will go back to a teaching career once my youngest goes to school, so she did a double whammy on me!
"F&F"? "Fiddle & Faddle"? Thought they'd be about 64 years old by now.
My God -- do I suddenly feel old! Jack Kennedy's casual squeeze-girls are about to start collecting Social Security!
OTOH there is something too be said of being able to say, "let me introduce you to my wife the lawyer, now stop bothering me or I'll sue."
Me, too! And his clenched fist with thumb UP! And chopping, chopping, CHOPPING the air...
GAG!
LOL!
She scraped that boy off her shoes.
ROTFLMAO
No wonder she is filled with nothing but hate.........can't have the real thing.......doesn't enjoy the truth and realities of life......snicker, snicker, heheheheehehe
I'm happy for you - after all the abuse and stomach lining you have sacrificed to bring us oppo research by watching al Qatie on a daily basis, today's edition sounds like the payoff you have deserved for so long.
For all the abuse the left and the Kerry campaign have piled on George Bush, it's nothing compared to the level of psychotic, white-hot, gibbering hatred that has been directed at the Vice President. I have never seen any family take as much venom and bile from the left as have the Cheneys. The media and the Rats have been so intent on portraying Dick Cheney as the locus of all evil that exists or ever has existed in the world that they have started to believe themselves and think that every American citizen loathes him as much as they do. Therefore, in their sick minds they can say anything as all about him and his family and the public willl just smile and nod in agreement.
It sounds to me like the Cheneys are tired of being used as the punching bag of the left and are finally starting to hit back. Furthermore, it sounds like the public has just about had enough of the constant, ridiculous Cheney bashing as well. I for one am glad to see it.
"F&F"? "Fiddle & Faddle"? Thought they'd be about 64 years old by now.
F&F=Fox and Friends. Not so sure about Fiddle & Faddle. I must have missed them. I do hope they don't get caught in those big Soc Sec cuts Kerry keeps telling us about.
If you've seen Kerry on tv this week, you can see he is under intense strain. He looks ten years older than at the debates. Of course, he probably doesn't have makeup on. Anyhoo, he's looking mighty sickish and that says more to me than poll numbers.
Got to wonder if she's read Ann Coulter's new book. They've got to be soulmates!
it's already been posted
I don't have any pics, but I think she's a real cutie.
Why does Kerry keep making the Communist Clenched Fist salute? It's sKerry.
LIZ CHENEY '08!
