Coffee Tied to Inflammation, Perhaps Heart Disease
Reuters ^ | 10/20/04

Consuming moderate-to-high amounts of coffee is associated with increased levels of several inflammatory markers, a finding that could help explain previous reports linking the beverage to heart disease. Ongoing, low-level inflammation is thought to be an underlying factor in the development of heart disease.

The latest findings, which appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, are based on a study of about 3000 subjects with no history of cardiovascular disease. A food-frequency questionnaire was used to assess coffee intake, and blood samples were tested for levels of various compounds that are known to promote, or are a marker of, inflammation.

Compared with subjects who did not drink coffee, those who consumed more than about 1 cup of the beverage per day had significantly higher levels of all the inflammatory markers tested, Dr. Demosthenes B. Panagiotakos, from Harokopio University in Athens, and colleagues report.

The results held true even after factoring in age, gender, smoking, body weight, physical activity, and other potential confounders, the researchers point out.

Although the findings provide a mechanism by which coffee intake could promote heart disease, the authors note that not all previous studies have identified an association between the two. Hence, further studies are needed to confirm the present findings.

The journal wants $8 for the full article, but this abstract is free, and it details the type of people involved in the study and the blood markers that were found. Weight was not mentioned, but it might be in the full article.

I'm sure this research was not sponsored by Starbucks. I wonder what other factors could have influenced the results of this study vs. the others.

This could be hugh and series.

I hope not, because Starbucks is one of my best holdings. That stock has been on fire for a few years, right through the Clinton recession and after.

I will hunt around and see what I can find out.

I am surprised by this study because in the past it has been said that coffee, though addictive, is one of the safer substances around. I am not sure that I can live without it, quite frankly.

Anyway, while Starbucks throws a few bones to the environmentalists and labor activists so they'll keep drinking, it behaves like any other corporation,
we shareholders come first,
and I am sure we will soon be celebrating the opening of the first Starbucks store in Baghdad, as soon as it's safe. I would be very surprised if SBUX would risk meddling in politics.

There might be some other logistical issue in getting beans to the green zone, though. But I am sure that people would be willing to ship some care packages to our troops.

Why do these morons even bother to present a study if they have disclaim it like this? In other words, "we got not idea what the hell coffee does or does not do, we just want our fifteen minutes of fame".

It's because we're just beginning to the health risks of chronic low-level inflammation, from arthritis to cancer to heart disease. They presented the results of their study and what it concludes and doesn't conclude. That's how science works. The disclaimers are good because it helps weed through the noise of a journalist who might not be scientifically informed.

Getting another cup as I post this. LOL

I received a Free Republic coffee mug, with my screen name inscribed on it, for being a dollar-a-day donor. Now, it looks like I'll have to hire John Edwards to go after Free Republic on my behalf, since they clearly are enablers of my dangerous habit.

"WHAT'S NEXT MASTURBATION ACTUALLY DOES CAUSE BLINDNESS?"

Perhaps it does, since you insist on using ALL CAPS.

At my age, I've had to accept that some things just aren't like they use to be............but I'll be darn if I give up my coffee!

If I don't have my morning cup with my FR, the hubby's going to tie of a heart attack from my grumpy mood all day!

I didn't know one could even be classified has having drank any coffee until halfway through the second pot.

I resemble that consumption pattern. But I'm not in the same league as Voltaire, who was said to have consumed fifty cups a day on a routine basis.

What are "inflammatory markers" and which ones are we talking about? (Need facts for discussion only; no intention to quit coffee here.)

I've noticed for years that many articles about scientific research that appear in the mass media tend to follow the same formula, like a three-act play:

Act 1: Frighten, enthuse or inflame the public. E.g.:

Although the findings provide a mechanism by which coffee intake could promote heart disease, ...

Act 2: Mention that, with current research, we're not sure yet. E.g.:

... the authors note that not all previous studies have identified an association between the two.

Act 3: Beg for more funding to really find the answer. E.g.:

Hence, further studies are needed to confirm the present findings.

Don't worry, it's an even-numbered year. Coffee is always bad for you during even-numbered years. In 2005, it will be good for you again.

I forget what years oatmeal is good for you.
