The inmates at the Allred Unit, a tough Texas prison, mostly go by names like Monster, Diablo and Animal. They gave Roderick Johnson, a black gay man with a gentle manner, a different sort of name when he arrived there in September 2000. They called him Coco.
Under the protocols of the prison gangs at Allred, gay prisoners must take women's names. Then they are assigned to one of the gangs.
"The Crips already had a homosexual that was with them," Mr. Johnson explained. "The Gangster Disciples, from what I understand, hadn't had a homosexual under them in a while. So that's why I was automatically, like, given to them."
According to court papers and his own detailed account, the Gangster Disciples and then other gangs treated Mr. Johnson as a sex slave. They bought and sold him, and they rented him out. Some sex acts cost $5, others $10.

You know, I responded to this post with the fact that I have a real understanding of this issue. Coco is a fraud, because s/he knew she was to be a "punk" when s/he got to prison. It wasn't sexual slavery. For some reason the Moderators don't like to see comments that have real understanding instead of the bravatto that I hear on this topic.
As a new person, and a dollar a day member, who has made several other contributions to this board, I'm quite offended that a post that was well within the TOS of this board was censored for no known reason.
Prison as presently constituted should be abolished. It makes the prisoners more dangerous and motivates them to reoffend, especially if they are violent sociopaths.
In Jim's world, there would be three levels of retribution for crime:
1) All unprovoked violent attacks should be punished by death. People who plot crimes like rape and assault are broken in their heads, we don't know what to do about them, when we release them they reoffend, and life in prison a) costs a fortune and b) brutalizes the others they come in contact with.
2) All property crime should be punished by flogging or some othr immediate and physical punishment.
3) Property criminals who reoffend should be isolated from society in a "criminals only" zone, from which no escape is possible and into which no resources are put except erecting and maintaining the fence.
The current system is broken beyond repair. let's fix it.
Their sons might be one 'lapse in judgement' away from a stint in prison, and they laugh this off.
One cannot be all things to all people. I agree that one should should be prioritize issues and efforts.
That doesn't mean that that one can't send a few dollars to the orgs leading the fight, can't respond to asenine posts, or spend a few minutes out of a year on this issue.
He went in gay, most likely, he did a few tricks to gain favor, then found himself in somehting he did not expect, to be EVERYBODY'S girlfriend.
This is NOT a story of a straight man getting raped, this is a story of a gay man who most likely did the first few gay sex encounters willingly.
If what you say is true, then 'prison officials' should resign en masse in protest.
Whoa...what about those gubmint paychecks?!
Guess those honorable men will sit tight.
You're on the right track.
The present system is an ill-inspired socialist utopian fantasy(correction and rehabilitation, indeed!), and deserves to be destroyed root and branch.
This story is NOT about an innocent man getting homosexualy raped, it is abot a GAY man who is claiming rape, when in prison, the only sex he is going to GET is all gay sex!
How can we trust his story?
I stick by my guess: That he did it a few times willingly, then found himself going along for the ride on the back of a tiger and now has regrets for his actions, so, he naturally sues the prison system!
Somehow I can't but imagine that the concept of 24-36 months solo 23 hrs a day could not help but reduce the numbers of the criminal element substantially...as opposed to the current hell....
This guy was gay before he went to prison --- very likely he exposed himself plenty of times to AIDS before and while in prison.
I would expect then, that "Coco" should have at the very least, an excellent civil rights case.
One problem with that is that there aren't enough guards to watch the inmates all the time in safe situations.
I am all for spartan barracks or dorms, 2 men to a room, locked down all day, leave enough room for an exercise mat and a radio with plenty of free Bibles to read and a visiting book cart.
Leave them locked up all day, have showers in the cell right next to the toilet, and use a selector switch like at a car wash, one to choose soapy water, the other to select rinse water!
"The inmates at the Allred Unit, a tough Texas prison, mostly go by names like Monster, Diablo and Animal. They gave Roderick Johnson, a black gay man with a gentle manner ...
How "gentle" could this guy have been for him to end up in a "tough Texas prison"? What did Johnson do?
I have a few prison guard friends who tell me two things:
In New York in the federal prisons one works in, the rape incidents are rare, it is not like the movies at all.
In Connecticut, at Somers MAX, however, the homosexual sex is consentual at night in the cells, and it is almost everyone of them that is doing it to each other!
That shocked me!
"and use a selector switch like at a car wash, one to choose soapy water, the other to select rinse water!"
I'm with you ---- for one what did Coco end up in prison for doing? Maybe he raped a child or was some kind of pedophile? Did he murder another gay man and now wants to claim he's some kind of victim?
But I can see segregating the prisons --- put all the very violent types together and let them sort things out how they would anyhow --- the less violent types could be together and non-violent types could be together.
An old girlfriend's little brother of 19, kcocked down a 65 year old woman to steal her purse, got sentenced to time in jail, got AIDS, and is now dead.
I feel sorry for those rape victims, not the gay ones who most likely started their sexual romps voluntarily.
It's not like they weren't doing all these same things before they went to prison --- violence is the reason most are there --- so it shouldn't really be a surprise that they never changed.
