The inmates at the Allred Unit, a tough Texas prison, mostly go by names like Monster, Diablo and Animal. They gave Roderick Johnson, a black gay man with a gentle manner, a different sort of name when he arrived there in September 2000. They called him Coco.
Under the protocols of the prison gangs at Allred, gay prisoners must take women's names. Then they are assigned to one of the gangs.
"The Crips already had a homosexual that was with them," Mr. Johnson explained. "The Gangster Disciples, from what I understand, hadn't had a homosexual under them in a while. So that's why I was automatically, like, given to them."
According to court papers and his own detailed account, the Gangster Disciples and then other gangs treated Mr. Johnson as a sex slave. They bought and sold him, and they rented him out. Some sex acts cost $5, others $10.

So, now, do you put scarce tax money into schools or into building single cells for every prisoner in America?
This is a NYT piece. Thus not very trustworthy.
Even if you've lost all hope,
Don't pick up the soap.
Did you read the article? The process for protecting people is broken, it isn't used. It's obvious that a lot of people supervising or working in prisons don't care about it. They have contempt for the prisoners (understandable) and treat them all the same, so the weak get trampled by the strong.
Remember if you defend yourself in most big cities and you could end up in prison if you get the wrong DA. You might laugh about this but it could be you.
The NYT invented neither the problem of prison rape nor this guy's story. Some healthy skepticism is called for with the MSM, but not knee-jerk rejection.
"TV is after all the crazed liberals slow drip of insanity, debuachery and disrespect to its viewership."
You nailed that one!
"What do you suggest? Short of solitary confinement for every prisoner, 23 hours a day, you're not going to stop it."
For starters no more prisoner mingling, that will stop their organization meetings, no more loitering in TV rooms, shower rooms, weight rooms. Prison is NOT suppose to be Club Med. What a farce that turned out to be. There are lawful people and children living in the streets who "deserve" a second chance at a productive life or a start in life and tax payers are giving the REAL criminals FREE EATS AND BOARDING. Most criminals commit petty crimes just to get back into the prison system for the comy benefits. I don't even have a work out room with weights in my house!
Exactly.
Use profanity like that again and you're out of here.
It's counterproductive to "punish" criminals by creating an environment in which other crimes can flourish. On the other hand, I don't have much sympathy for someone suffering in a hell of his own making.
So, what's your solution? Pay prison guards more so you'll get people who care?
Face it. On the list of societal concerns, most Americans would say that people in prison deserve whatever they get.
If you want to change attitudes, you've got a big hill to climb.
Oh, please. WHERE does it say this gay man did something worthy of capital punishment? The poor guy will get AIDS, from this barbaric treatment.
There has been a story on the news in the past day or so about a young, white student who committed the unpardonable crime of streaking his graduation. Some judge sentenced him to 2 years in jail.
This young man (somebody's child, just like the gay man in the story), is going to be prey, not a prisoner. And don't you DARE say that asinine horse pucky about don't do the crime.
The streaker should be sentenced to doing 2 years of unpleasant community service, and not be thrown to the wolves. Who did this boy hurt? Nobody!
There IS a solution but it will have to be implemented across the board in every State.
REVAMP the laws to include mandatory death sentences in more crimes. I would say that to sexually abuse a homosexual while in prison deserves the DEATH PENALTY, no trial, no jury, no reprieve. Within 72 hours of proof. DNA in someone's orafice would be enough to convict.
I am pro-life. If a person commits a heinous crime WHILE in prison, he forfeits his life. Purely and simply.
It should be stopped immediately.
comy should be "comfy"
as long as bureaucrats can act with impuinity nothing will change
.
I work with both state and federal prisoners in Texas. It is much better to be in the federal system than the state one for two reasons. First many of the offenders are there on drug trafficking violations and are a different "class" of criminal, much less likely to be violent. Second, the officers in charge of the prisoners are better paid, and tend to be much more professional then those hired by the state.
Like it or not the majority of society has the welfare of prisoners at the bottom of their list of concerns. The culture in prison, is merely an outgrowth of the more diseased cultural influences present in our own society. Change our culture's view on thing's (e.g. homosexual behavior), and you will see a corresponding decrease in that activity in prison.
That being said, I've met young kids, 18 and 19 yr olds arrested for minor theft or drug charges. They have a very rough time in jail, and with the HIV rate in there, a 6 month hitch can turn into a death sentence.
For those who are less than concerned about the fate of prisoners, keep in mind that many pro-lifers have been and continue to be arrested. And with the new laws regarding "hate speech" becoming more popular around the world, many people posting on free republic could be arrested in some countries.
Got to cut this short, the kids are restless. God bless.
Force prison guards to do their jobs. Fire them or charge them if they don't.
What would happen if you didn't do your job? Would your boss's only option be to pay you more?
We're not talking about converting 300 million Americans. People who run prisons have a job to do and they're not doign it. If they're psychotic enough to enjoy watching prisoners get raped, I suggest they're in the wrong line of work.
