Crazy Horse strip club draws ire over name

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (AP) - Descendants of the storied American Indian warrior Crazy Horse want an upscale Paris strip club to stop using his name, saying it's disrespectful to him and his offspring. The nightclub, Crazy Horse Paris, was established in 1951 and is well-known for adult entertainment similar to that featured at casinos in Las Vegas. It's located near the Champs-Elysees, the Seine River and the Pont de l'Alma bridge, where Lady Diana was killed.

Crazy Horse was an Oglala Sioux warrior known for fighting the U.S. military in the 1800s. One of his descendants and an executor of his estate, Harvey White Woman, has written club owners, asking that they change the name.

He said the request was prompted by an HBO cable television special that featured the club and its dancers wearing what looked to be feathered headdresses, a revered native symbol.

"I saw the name and I said, 'That's not right.' When you say the name Crazy Horse, you don't conjure up nightclubs. You conjure up the warrior," he said in a telephone interview from his home in Kyle on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

White Woman said he decided to write the club before taking legal action, something Crazy Horse's descendants have done in the past.

Let's analyze this first. Is the mascot for this strip club a charicature of an Indian or a horse? If the former, they might have a fair gripe. If the latter, they have no legitimate gripe at all.

It's pretty conceited of the Sioux to think they have exclusive rights to the phrase "Crazy Horse" anyway.

cue sarcasm:

Perhaps John Kerry now has a good reason for a summit with the French. Clearly their advanced sensitivity, utter humanity and emancipated secularism will rise to the occasion and they'll retitle the club Chirac Horsey House.

Or maybe Moulin Rouge?

end sarcasm mode

Harvey White Woman

I don't guess there's any need to point out that this name offends me...

Damn Human-chauvanists! Couldn't this club have been named after a horse?

I don't think many French know who Crazy Horse is. If it was a strip club in Sioux Falls, SD, ok, I can see that. But in Paris? Maybe Jacques can introduce a UN resolution for this?

First they ruined the best malt liquor ever, Crazy Horse, now they want to go after the strip club.

Screw them.

It's been open since 1951...

...and just now they are offended?

I think this just proves this 'political correct' jargon concerning the Sioux and other Indians (and yes, I use that word deliberately) is all a bunch of hogwash.

Well, they use feathered head-dresses, so do you think it's a horse they are referring to in the name, or the Indian?

However, seeing as this is in France, I'd suggest the Sioux forget it and just ignore it. How anyone could take anything seriously the french do is beyond me...

It's even dumber to think they can influence a bar in PARIS. Talk about too much time on your hands....

I live in Virginia. The politically correct term here, according to the tribes themselves is "American Indian."

I wouldn't call that the "politically correct" term, so much as it is what is preferred over the P.C. "Native American" which was a pretty stupid label made up by pretty stupid people.

American Indian works just fine for me - it puts America first. ;0)

For a primer on how to refer to Native Americans, please consult HBO's Deadwood when the new season starts.
