Infrared cameras surveying Mt. St. Helens have revealed a large uplifting of new magma into the crater floor. For all intents and purposes, it is now erupting. Radar may reveal any ash clouds that come out, the IR video on the local channel is quite spectacular.
If you do, be sure to post a link back here, so we can watch.
Well now, isn't this just great - I can't see it, but I can think about it. Fooey.
Oh well, it's still kinda cool to think about it...
Do we have any footage anywhere?
I wish!
KING-5 TV in Seattle has thermal-imaging footage. FOr my dial-up, it is a slow load, and I didn't want to register, either.
My husband, a friend and I were up above Whistling Jack's in 80' when the mountain blew. At the time, someone that knew someone....you know how that goes, but the rumor came back that had the trade winds been X miles slower that day that the ash would have fallen on Yakima and incenerated everything the moment it hit. I always wondered if that was a valid concern.
Our experience was certainly unforgetable and not something I want to repeat;/
A bit odd, nothing shows up on any of the USGS earthquake maps.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/
And for California: http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/latest.htm
Yet there are monitoring station links from IRIS which graphed out the quake. In fact there was a monitoring station in South Dakota and one in Russia whose sensors picked up and graphed the energy waves from this quake.
One wonders how many other quakes have been reported and posted on USGS later than IRIS.
I've been searching for any updates but so far it's been a rather going-in-circles search. Found great live web-cams of volcanoes all over the world, including one in Turkey, one in Russia, and a lovely one in Greece.
Uhoh.. this means tomorrow night's L.A. news will be full of "should we be getting ready for The Big One??" stories. Paul Moyer's putting on his makeup as we speak. thanks for the ping :)
Thankfully, I had already finished my cup of herb tea before I read your post or I'd need a new keyboard!
By the way, that earthquake is reported all over most earthquake monitoring sites with the exception of USGS. Have you ever heard of USGS not reporting one? I've cross-checked using latitude, time and magnitude and so far nothing at all on USGS.
Leni
Which earthquake? The one off California?
It's too far offshore to show up on the USGS North America Maps.
It's listed on the USGS NEIC worldwide listing:
http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_pmab.html
Pretty routine offshore earthquake, 4.6.
It's just you. Scientists have done great from my perspective.
Remember the reporting of scientists by the idiotic media makes the scientists seem silly, when it's the fault of the media.
I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to come on these threads and read, for the 8253rd time, that comment.
The concern was that the quake was not reported on USGS' main site and that it was not listed under World Earthquakes nor USA Earthquakes.
Initially, I found the report on IRIS.
Thank you for finding it under the NEIC-USGS listing.
Scientists are preparing to later today send an unmanned drone into the crater to get ultra closeups of what's going on.
Hi there everyone from Australia.
This is my second attempt to post. Don't know what happened to the first one - perhaps it might appear later? After seeing this threat tonight, I decided to join freerepublic, so that I/we could say thank you for such a great forum.
We watch Fox (on Foxtel out here) and we were most amused last week when someone wondered when we might see Geraldo hanging from a helicopter trying to get a good shot of the crater. We love Fox, Geraldo and ebay, and most of all you good people on freepers who keep us informed.
Me and my friends would like to say blessings to you all, America and your president. We are happy that our P.M. Mr John Howard is safely back in the job. Most people I know want wise men in high office - showponies are out and capable people are in? Yes indeed! Good luck on the first Tuesday in November. Sorry for the thread drift, but I just wanted to say it.
Blessings one and all and take care. Watch out for Louie the Fly.
I never get tired of that comment and it always makes me laugh!
