A SNUB FROM SPAIN
NY Post ^ | October 10, 2004 | JOHN J. MILLER

October 10, 2004 -- THERE'S a place in the world where French troops soon will be relieving American ones. But it's not Iraq — it's Spain. French soldiers have been invited to march in tomorrow's annual procession marking Dia de la Hispanidad, which is the Spanish version of Columbus Day. They're replacing U.S. Marines who have been disinvited from participating.

Three years ago, in a gesture of solidarity following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Spain asked the Marines to take part in this annual celebration. They were invited back in 2002 and 2003. It looked like a new tradition was in the making.

But Spain's prime minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has put a stop to that. "What does not continue," explained Defense Minister Jose Bono, "is subordination and getting down on our knees on orders from a foreign government."

My parents just returned from a great trip to Italy. They said the locals were very nice, as they're particularly pleased with getting a big chunk of France's American tourist dollars...

I was picking on the French as a whole and the Spanish government of cowards. Not the Spanish troops. That being said I agree whole heartedly with you about France. We long ago, should have let the infant FRG have France as a tank maneuver area and free fire artillery range.

When I was stationed in the FRG the French Kassernes were the filthiest things you could every imagine.

Yeah, they are perfectly capable of GETTING DOWN ON THEIR KNEES without orders.

As their economy goes into the crapper with this government, the next one will come back with us.

The crowds love the spiffy bright white flags the French soldiers wave as they march by.

Spain went from Fascist to Communist in record time (27 years). These two ideologies are not, despite insistence of otherwise, on the polar opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Ugh... EuroPolitics makes me ill. The day I will accept foreign policy advice or political grandstanding from Europeans, a group of people who have a habit of burning down their entire continent every 50 years or so, will be the day I listen to financial advice from my dog.

Sit, Ubu. Sit. Good boy.

I meant a non-forced change from fascism to communism / socialism... I need a professional editor. :)

Are they still mad at that spanish-American war deal?

No, they have gotten over that, for the most part.

They are still angry at us, however, because we supported Franco back in the 1950s in return for his support against the communists. The Spanish left has never forgiven us for that and now they see a historical chance to get even.

You have to understand that Spain was under Arab rule for 800 years, from 710 to 1492 IIRC. So for them, it's six of one and a half dozen of the other...at least that is the only conclusion I can draw from their cowardly reaction to the railroad bombings. The Spanish military must be seething, but the cowardly government holds the power.

For some reason that reminded me of Schroeders statement to the effect that "When Washington tells us what we must do we do not have to click our heels and say jawohl."

Why didn't you post that information with your first comment instead of being snide with your second?

Never mind, your name tells us why.

Listen you asked a stupid question, on the third thread about the same topic, you get the type answer you deserve. Get a clue.

Nah, the socialist pansies are still pissed that we made friends with Franco...You remember him, the Franco who kicked the socialists/communists/anarchists' collective asses during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).
