"...A week ago after the debate the Kerry campaign was experiencing the same sort of relief that swept through the passengers on the Titanic after the iceberg was passed and before they knew of the damage below the waterline."This is the line of the week--excellent!

KERRY FLIP-FLOPPED ON TORA BORA
He used to have a realistic appreciation of the difficulties of operating in those mountains and of how hard it is to hunt down one man. Here is what he said on CNN's Late Edition on January 20, 2002:
"The bottom line is that the closest we came was in Tora Bora. I do think some people have asked some questions about how that particular component of the mission sort of played out. But the fact is that it is a difficult place. He is elusive.
I think they are doing the maximum amount right now possible to try to track him down. And it is an extraordinarily hard thing for him to hide somewhere. I mean, over a period of time, I think, he is in trouble."

I told my college class the day after the debate that Bush had lured Kerry into several "easter eggs"---these are in computer games that only open up after you pass a level, then they come back to attack you from behind (or, occasionally, open a new level). I think the "global test" is only the biggest, but there are several others.

Rarely have so many commentators been so wrong about so obvious a pratfall as Kerry's global test, and given that pundits on both sides of the aisle missed it, the answer can't be bias. Sure it is. It is a bias so deep it induces selective blindness.

I totally agree with this article.
Great post!

Hewitt is such a homer that it's hard to take his theorizing and prognostications seriously. But in this case, I think his analysis reflects the opinions -- spoken or muzzled -- of a gret deal of political observers , myself included. About the only memorable issues are Kerry's global tst, and Bush's visible consternation. The Dems know this, hence the "facial gaffe" ads that followed; that's as substntive a messge s they were able to cull from the last debate.

Here's the last few words from the article....
"....but it's still a suicide note."
I was kind of left hanging when I initially read the article posting, but then found the last words(s) on the Weekly Standard website. :-)
