October 4, 2004 -- Was John Kerry trying to pull something at the debate last week? That question was burning up the Internet yesterday after a slo-mo review of the footage showed the Massachusetts senator taking an object out of his right pocket before the first question.
Was it a cheat sheet as some conservative bloggers claimed or was it something innocuous?
Either way, it would violate the debate rules agreed to by both campaigns: "No props, notes . . . or other tangible things may be brought into the debate."
Many blogs offered links to the "Pocket-gate" footage. One, INDC Journal, even posted frame-by-frame stills purporting to show Kerry pulling out a notecard and placing it onto the podium.
But the mystery was solved when The Post reviewed a Fox News Channel feed from Thursday's debate: Kerry pulled out . . . a black pen.

Be patient. There was probably a pen inside whatever that thing is. I very seriously doubt the N. Y. Post is lying. Kind of disappointing though. I was hoping for index cards.
Bet that won't happen again.
Up his sleeve?
If they could cheat and slip in a pen, why not something else?
October surprise?
Post did this analysis without imput from Fox, see indcjournal.com. So .... the Post isn't exactly conservatice. Also Fox is letting us down on this. At least use your original non-compressed film to do an analysis. In fact, Fox is doing an O'Reilly this whole week. Geez Rupert Murdock, why bite the hand that feeds your success. We don't want a conservative bias network, we just want a "hypeless" cable show. The Newsweek Poll was junk, and they just played and played. Couldn't watch Fox all day yesterday.
It is what is . Not a pen. You do not unfold a pen. There should not have been anything added to the Podium surface. Those were the rules.
Could it be that Fox is being overly cautious because of Carl Cameron's remarks?
Part One of the video begins with the candidates walking to their podiums and as indicated from this real-time, undoctored video, the item is clearly not a pen.
Oh, forgot to mention - best viewed in full-screen version. When video begins to play, right click on the screen and select zoom, option full screen and the picture will enlarge to full monitor size.
Take a look at this video clip and see sKerry using a SILVER pen.

I couldn't find Brit's email but at Foxnews.com you can email Special Report (Brit's show) a story.
What is the final decision regarding Kerry cheating?
Is it all going away as just a black pen, or will this story have legs?
This can't be it. Watch what Kerry is doing while Lehrer is asking the first question of the debate to him. His hands are still unfolding something on the podium and his eyes glance down at it as if to read. He wouldn't have been writing any notes at this time as there was nothing to take notes about yet.
I looked for that but unfortunately it seems that all the feeds were showing Lehrer's concluding remarks. So Kerry would have had plenty of time to remove it while off camera.
That said, watch the debate as it starts up. Kerry got the first question right off the bat after stepping to the podium. The camera shows him while Lehrer is speaking and his hands are still very active - as if they are unfolding something or arranging something. He even glances down at his hands, still moving, while Lehrer is asking him the question. Kerry WOULD NOT have needed to write anything at that point in the debate cause it had just started and there was nothing to write. So what was he doing so frantically?
I continue to hope for index cards, but I doubt it. If it is, great, it will be found out. There are millions of people that are aware of this. There will be a satisfactory answer to this, one way or the other.
I have to admit I don't see how a white rectangle can be a black pen.
LOL!
No, I don't think this one has legs, much as I'd like that to be so. Rush just commented on the story and basicly said it's a non-issue and anyone connected with the administration should stay far away from it because nothing can be proven. No one could accuse Rush of supporting the DNC and I think he's right on this one.
Do you think it is a PDA/Blackberry?
Has this image been sent to Drudge?
Kerry obviously violated debate rules. So, yes that means he chated. Why? Surely just not for the heck of it.
