Here are the specific frames from the debate video shoqing most clearly what Kerry had in his hand as he took it out of his pocket and placed it on the podium.
I have taken two of the frames, lightened them, zoomed in, and sharpened the pics. No other enhancements have been made:

Hmmmmm, maybe someone could blow up some pics of Kerry's ears. Trust but verify :)
Certainly not a pen. Noticed that he uses
both hands to place the item on the podium.
One would not do that with a kleenex, package
of kleenex, pen, or even glasses. Typically
this would be done only if one intended to
view it later. Care was taken to place it in his
field of view.
Talking points that ignore the questions which were fairly predictable anyway.
Liars are usually cheaters, also. Dems. are so good at dirty tricks.

You'll notice too, after the debate, that Kerry was talking to the moderator for quite some time...probably thanking him for giving the questions ahead of time.
Thats the problem with us getting out there in the "mainstream" the kooks come out of the wireworks.

What I would like to know.......was Matt Drudge in his pajamas when he posted this story?
Kerry was holding on to emphasize the height difference as long as possible. Notice how he smiles at Jim the whole time he is doing it. Bush has to literally yank his hand away with a tug. Bush's people told him to minimize the time standing close to Kerry. Also if the debate was down to podium size, how far away, lights, ad nauseum then you know that if Bush could have bought notes he would have. Kerry practised this sleight of hand for days in Wisconsin. Has his nails done and a fake tan so we were all checking for the tan more than what he was doing.
