Politics: 3 October 2004, Sunday.

A British citizen has been arrested on suspicions of involvement in Beslan school massacre in which 300 people, half of them children, died.

A member of the group responsible for the Beslan school massacre last month is a British citizen who attended the infamous Finsbury Park mosque in north London, The Observer reported.

Citing Russia's security forces, the British journalists claim that two other members of the group, loyal to Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, are also believed to have been active in the UK until less than three years ago.

The report identifies one of them as Kamel Rabat Bouralha, 46 years old, a 'key aide' of Basayev, who has a GBP 5.5 M price on his head.

President Vladimir Putin, in a televised address to the nation, suggested that some in the West -- Cold War throwbacks bent on weakening Russia -- are helping terrorists. He said terror attacks on Russia are encouraged by forces abroad that fear its nuclear weapons, wording widely interpreted as a veiled reference to the West, particularly the United States. Zbigniew Brzezinski's crew?

Is he an immigrant Muslim, or a British-born convert? (They're equally dangerous.)

Being more difficult to profile, converts are more dangerous.

Is this a feasible idea? Putin to cordon off all of Chechnya, then tell the people that they can move out (and the govt will help them find new places to live -- very important). Those who wish to leave can do so by leaving their weapons. then, Putin bombs the **** out of the place.

Profiling doesn't work: If you were to profile folks based on whether they 'looked Arab', then what would you say to these folks?

From here

  A Jew from Cochin, India

  President Assad from Syria

A citizen of a country that gives shelter and support to the anti-Russian Islamists? What a surprise!

Noone was saying it works 100% of the time; however, it is a pretty good "enrichment" technique when looking for the suspects.

I'd say it doesn't work at all -- any chechens would breeze past if we just had profiling based on looks. Ditto for Bosnians and Syrians (well most) and Turks and many Iranis.

No it's not.

Many innocent people will stay while many bad guys will leave.

Oh no, this cannot be! These chechens are simply freedom fighters, Des. We know that.

When Putin says there are other nationalities killing Russians, it's all his KGB lies, dontcha know? He's just trying to gain support for his war.

Now, hmm, where are those Putin bashers?

Actually most decent chechens began leaving in droves back in 1999 when Mashkadov put Sharia law into place. I guess those public stonings and hand-removals were a bit too much for them.

There are towns and schools in southern Russia that are predominantly chechen now. Good people.

What is left in the country is primarily of terrorist interest these days. Russia allowed anyone who wanted to leave in 1999 to come over, and paid for them to be settled in.

I spit on Ziggy and his hatred for the Orthodox. He desires to see Russia torn apart and the Orthodox church destroyed, calling us both equally enemies of the west.
