One of the most powerful cultural forces shaping America, they've produced great Presidents, soldiers, inventors, actors and writers. But, as a group, they've remained unvisible. The time has come to change that, says the author.

The Scots-Irish are a fiercely independent, individualist people. It goes against their grain to think collectively. But, as America rushes forward into yet another redefinition of itself, the contributions of the Scots-Irish are too great to remain invisible. My culture needs to reclaim itself-stop letting others define, mock and even use it-and is so doing regain its power to shape the direction of America
Because our country needs us.

Irish, Italian, Scots-Irish, and English.
Yes, I'm very confused. :-)
Scots-Irish on mom's side, German on Dad's. Born fighting!
I'm descending from Flinns (non-Catholic) and Ferrells - hill people of West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. With a good mix of Irish Irish (Connors) and English (Pollard, Vaden, Cross)
I can't claim such a grand heritage. I have some German. But don't tell anyone, ok?
BTTT
Another really fine book on the subject is "How the Scots Invented the Modern World" by Arthur Herman. Very informative and well researched. I think Herman is presently the director of Western Culture exhibits at the Smithsonian. Webb is terrific, too, of course, but I have not read his books.
OK I must confess 1/32 German (Tanenbaum on my mothers side)
Irishman here, will have a dual citizenship with Ireland in a few more months, makes a nice EU work permit.
I absolutely love the Scotch-Irish!
Good Scotch whiskey and bad Irish women!!!
Me too! But the reality is, in my very large extended American family, after 120 years, the gene pool has been blended with Germans, Slavs, Mexicans, etc., etc., etc. In other words, we're now mutts. But what was once called "The Great Melting Pot" was the main cause of this melding. And all-in-all, except for weird Uncle Fred, things have worked out very well for us.
Thanks! I stole if from a desciption of Cheney I saw posted here.
"I was born fighting. My mother's maiden name was Dempsey."
I got you beat. My surname IS Dempsey and John Dempsey, my grandfather was allegedly kicked out of Ireland for...you guessed it,fighting (with someone who didn't want to fight with him!).
So there!
And HERE!!!
Did someone call????
Here too! I call her WIFE!
"Scots-Irish on mom's side, German on Dad's. Born fighting!"
