NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

"the facial expressions were a big turn-off to women"

Wrong!

Turn-off? At least to this woman; Kerry's pale patchy coloring coupled with his asinine smug smiling and the nodding, the bobbing of his head while the president was speaking. He just looked feeble and weak.

Oh, and if I see another buddah praying hands bow ...!

All politics aside, Kerry just creeps me out!!!

Bush had no business visiting hurricane victims the day of a debate.

O.K. THAT'S it. IF he had not visited the hurrican victims, just what do you think the MSM would have said about that?? And for how long would they have said it?? My guess is, until W.'s approval rating was affected and his poll #s driven down. Don't you see the irony?? Please, eat a peach or something and try to relax. He did what a president should do.

Limbaugh is completely off his rocker if he thinks it wont be the end.

it would be the following:

Michael Moore wins
MoveOn.org wins
MSM wins
Euroweenies win
Islamofascism wins

"After looking at Rasmussen, ABC, CBS (yeah, I know), Gallup, I'm convinced this Newsweek poll is a mess, like their others. Discount this ONE poll and Bush is ahead."

And here is still another to add to your list, the L.A. Times found only a 1% bounce for Kerry as well. Check out this thread:

ROFL!! Thanks!

Just not going to let these people win. It is so damn obvious that Democrats have taken ground to pry loose the weak, and they know as well as anyone that a number of influential people read this board and draw impressions of the general population from these threads than take it to screen and publication to parrot.

We're just all going to have to forego sleep for the next month to slap these Trolls down.

They are trying to sabotage Bush on performance so we don't examine what Kerry actually said!

Hey, MSM, explain to me again how Kerry is going to stop nuclear proliferation by giving them the fuel to make these weapons? Then explain to me how we are going to destroy these nukes he gave them the ability to make, when he outlaws the weapons systems we'll need!

Since I am a regular poster to this board, I distinctly remember many people saying Bush was ahead 5 to 8 points before the debate. I agree that the Newsweek number was not realistic, but other polls had Bush ahead by 8 to 11 points

Well, if you can't differentiate (5 to 8) from (8 to 11), and you are blaming Freepers for your confusion, please understand why we are ignoring you. Thanks for alerting us to your regular posting status. That makes you honest and uniquely punditariffic I guess.

Then why the hell did Baker agree to the terms? I would have insisted on someone other than Lehrer (an avowed Bush hating leftist) to be the moderater, too. Might as well have had Dan Blather as moderator. It WAS a farce, in favor of the Democrat socialists. Figures.

Well, when you oversample Dems it tends to produce a lower favorability rating for a Republican.

Well said!! Look people, we are fighting for the future of our country. If Kerry lets out about a Global Test during the debate, think what he will do as President. This is WAR. Sure, President Bush at least on style tanked Thursday night So what. The troops win the war not the generals. We are troops. We can't let this rattle us. That's what the Dems (Newsweek) want. They want to break our will. So we must keep on fighting till the end. Give all you got and thensome. By the way, the one thing that we all can do for President Bush is to Pray for him.
