NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Let's pray Bush learned from this debate that he should be himself, and forget about all those who said he shouldn't "smirk or be smart alecky". It was harder for Bush to hold himself back then let go.

I hope he won't let Kerry get away with his lies at the Town Hall debate.

Bush has alot to be proud of and all he has to do is bring it up.

From the initial internal polling results released that were NOT fraudulent, it would seem people fully understood what G.W. and Kerry were saying. They didn't buy into kerry's position at all.

Kerry got better marks on being "clear spoken", But G.W. took the win on the likeability, Iraq, etc... I think the American people are getting it. They've heard G.W's position on the WOT for three years, they could recite in their sleep. Kerry was the one that needed to score last night in substance, and he failed to do so.

Kerry's best hope at this point is to inflate perception he demonlished G.W. and attempt to make make another issue the one the election will turn on. he's clearly failing to win with the Michael Moore dogma.

There you were again at 7:31 Central Time on Fox. I believe the OhioW family has now reached celebrity status. Who's keeping the tally on how many times you are being shown with the President in film footage?

I listened to Limbaugh on Friday and he did not sound too happy with Bush's performance either, no matter how he tried to spin it. There were several instances where Limbaugh said Bush didn't give the response necessary, or simply didn't hammer Kerry like he should. I've listened to Limbaugh for 13 years and he sounded frustrated at Bush's performance. He picked apart many of Kerry's points, but many independents are not as politically motivated as people on this board. They don't pay attention to after-the-fact evaluations. This was a great opportunity for Bush to hold his own against Kerry. He dropped the ball, big time.

I wouldn't pay any attention to any polls by Newsweek. They have a heavy pro-Democrat bias so you know they are manipulating these polls numbers in an attempt to boost Kerry. Just ignore any numbers from Newsweek and CBS News. They are changing their sampling methods in the middle of the election cycle and their numbers are meaningless propaganda. I would bet that Bush has a significant lead now among likely voters, but we can't take anything for granted because of the substantial vote fraud the Dems are cooking up for November 2. We need a maximum GOP turnout, and I'm going to contribute more $ to the GOP to support registration and turnout efforts.

Black. :o)

Look for the man in front with the white beard. I'm to the left of him, head tilted. Beside me is (one of) our son(s) (he's on my homepage) and beside him, my one and only!

I'm not sure anyone ever fully believed Bush had an 11 point lead, but if he did, it was right after the convention. The numbers right after the convention are known as a "bounce". That means they typically do not last. The desire is to gain a bounce, and have it settle still above the challenger. Bush's bounce settled into about the 5-7 point range.

As of now we have no idea what it is, because newsweek's numbers aren't reliable. It'll be a few days before we start to get a glimpse at where Bush might possibly be. Even then, we are going to have three more debates with the election drawing to a close so from this point on it's going to be hard to get a firm grasp on how steady the numbers are.

Limbaugh did make me feel a little better friday after he brought the whole thing into context, But then he said if Kerry would be elected it wouldn't be the end of the world! I have to disagree with that and don't want to hear anyone say such a thing! The prospect of Kerry appointing 3 maybe 4 new judges on the U.S. Supreme court is pretty darn close to the end!
