NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

It ain't over 'til it's over

right?

No sense getting too worked up over one more poll, it's going to go down to the last week, just like we knew all along.

And remember, there's a lot of folks that read free republic, so don't start pushing the panic button now.

Based on the responses in the text on Iraq and right track/wrong track questions, clearly there was an oversampling of Democrats. One debate wouldn't change perceptions on such issues by that margin. I think the oversampling will be borne out when the full poll is published.

I think everyone needs to calm down. The debate was on Thursday. The poll was taken Thursday night after the debate, Friday and Saturday. If you look at Rasmussen all of his Kerry surges occur on the weekend. Any poll on the weekend leans to the democrats. Also it would be interesting to see what the party breakdown is for this poll.

One thing though, there is a bad vibe coming out of the debate for the president. You can see it on the news all the time.

"Bush left us with this mess. We now have to do whatever we can for what will probably be only a close win instead of a complete rout of the entire democrat establishment.

Another fine mess Bush has gotten us into."

Oh ye of little faith! ;-)

Gallup is the Gold Standard of polls. I make a bet that Newsweird is the only poll that shows this.

We have Bush to thank for this one. He could have finished Kerry the other night.

I have to agree with you. He didn't seem quite as prepared as he should've and when asked if Kerry had the moral attributes to be President, all he said that it was a "loaded question" and never mentioned Kerry's anti-war antics - including belonging to an organization that advocated assassination of Senators.

this is the source of his debate problem.

He knows Iraq and the war on terror cold. Instead of just relaxing and presenting what he clearly knows, he's been told by Rove and Hughes that he's got to repeat certain things and not be too aggressive or he'll turn off the women.

So, instead of knocking Kerry out with a couple of well-placed lines, he's repeating all the talking points, sometimes to an extreme (he said "it's hard work" fifteen times).

I love Bush and continue to work for him. But he's now going to be on Kerry's turf with domestic issues for the next two debates.

He missed a huge opportunity on Thursday. I simply couldn't believe it was happening.

Something not right with the poll. Bush had a 8-11 point lead. That's like a 15 point swing. You just don't loose that big of a lead. I could see a 3-5 drop but not this. Granted, President Bush deliverly was poor but he had no major gaffee like Kerry when he would use a Global test before taken preemptive action. I bet the poll was weighted Democratic.

This poll will make news and be damaging, let's not fool ourselves. But what will the RNC do about it? That's the important thing.

What if the poll is nothing but propaganda? Like the Harris poll at the start of Sept that claimed "Bush's convention bounch is gone"? Funny how the bad new for Bush polls are treated as gospel by a certain sect of Freepers and the ones that show bad new for Kerry are "suspicous" Why is that?

I agree. It's a trick. Not that we shouldn't take notice, it could work to our favor. Look, people said the same things after the 1st 2000 debate. Granted, Gore didn't do himself any favors by coming across as an obnoxious twerp. But, what's the one thing we all know about Kerry!?! He's an arrogant, egotistical, you know what! Let him think he's on a role, then the true Kerry is all the more likely to come out. I think he was quite guarded the other night, and even then he still let things like 'global test' slip out! The better he thinks he is, the more careless. On the other hand, now Bushes team has all the ammunition staight from the horses mouth (pun intended). They have time to plan and prepare and corner Kerry with his own words. Kerry can't claim that he changed his mind because of more info after only one week! I think Bush will be outstanding this next go around! I also think that Kerry's got himself in such a quagmire that he can't twist loose. This tiny set back, if you want to call it that, will keep us Repulicans on our toes!
