NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Well, yes, but if the polls are to be believed he would've still won had there been no debate.

But, Jorge, the questions weren't about Kerry; they were all about Bush and what Bush has done wrong.

Yes, and this gave him a golden opportunity to nail Kerry on his two-faced, hypocritical fraudulant criticisms of Bush's Iraq policy.

Kerry has taken so many different position on Iraq that he can't say anything without contradicting his own previous positions. Bush could have trapped him NO MATTER what he said.
But he didn't. And I still don't understand why.

Jorge, the problem may be one of expectations. Ours.

Bush is who he is. He grows impatient with being a politician in a mealy mouthed debate. He's a disciplined manager, and on his better days he's an inspirational leader. He's had a large number of "better days" lately IMO.

If you look at all the polls, the same people who say Kerry won the debate say Bush is a more forceful and trustworthy leader. That's just being buried by the Fifth Column (oops I mean Fourth Estate) but it's devestating to the Kerry folks. Don't lose sleep over Thursday's outcome, it's importance is nil.

I'm sanguine about our President's chances next month, and I pray to God we survive this next 20 years. We all have beautiful little mighty urchins who deserve the life we've been blessed with.

That question did not have to be asked. In a debate, as you saw Kerry do, W can answer with whatever he wants to. He had so many occasions to get in whatever points he thought was necessary. He just didn't do it.

I fight for W because I have 9 grandchildren who deserve a future as Americans, not Euro-thrash. Or wearing burkas for my grand daughters. Who was it who said..."Give me liberty or give me death"? No truer words were ever spoken.

Great grandma googooly moogoolies!

How wonderful for you fine lady! I'll bet you know how to kick butt!

We've got huge fish to catch and fry these days. It ain't easy. President Bush is a tough hombre and a skillful angler.

We couldn't ask for more. Kerry needs to be pancaked.

I agree. But this is politics. You can have the best positions on planet earth, but if you can't communicate them to voters, you are probably going to lose elections.

I've heard Bush give some of the best speeches I've heard in my life.

And I still say that considering the vast amount of material Kerry supplied when it came to his, flip-flops, contradictions and lies, there was no excuse for Bush not being better prepped for the debate.

My line for the next debate ...
GW...."As best as I can tell Mr Kerry agrees with me on some things most Tuesdays and Thursdays, especially if the moon is in the right position. I am hoping when he is back in the Senate he will continue to support what this administration is doing on those 2 days of the week and possibly a few others as well.

It's not good or bad, but I think W got tired of the bullsh*t.

"What am I doing here?"

When you wake up every morning and see the narrow escapes we Americans enjoy daily from major mass murder ... being patient with a poofter like Kerry is the toughest thang in life.

Well, my kids listened to me growing up. But my grandkids think i'm a softy. We discuss politics in front of them. we just have to watch our mouths and keep it clean. That is a monumental task when talking about Kerry. We pray that somewhere in the backs of their minds they keep what we say. They know President Bush is good. And senator kerry is bad. Well, we are Republicans now.

Sure be a pessimist. I thought Bush won hands down. Why get exorcised over NewsWeek and Matt Drudge.?

Drudge is no friend to Bush. So he'll enjoy tweaking the Bushies even if NewsWeek offers crap

...and watch the negative freepers swallow Drudge's sludge hook line and sinker.

I live in Tennessee and according to our polls here, Bush has maintained a 15 point lead for the past 2 monthes. don't understand why they put it in the weak Bush or too close to call column.

Matt is "so" 1999! LOL. He's through.

The bloggers, but especially this forum (which he petulantly disdained) have trumped his influence and currency.

While Drudge is gobbling Jagger in South Beach with his manly pals, thousands of nosy busybody Freepers and the blogosphere Rockfords are looking for scoops, waxing philosophical and cracking wise.

Beayooteeful thing.
