NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Why not fight Kerry instead of Bush.

That same "take" on FR has been a bit surprising to me

Why would it? This just gave the unappeasables a little hope that we may yet "see the light" and hand the party back over to the extreme right wing.

NEWSWEEK'S POLLS ARE A JOKE!!!!!!
If you adjust the numbers for equal dems and repubs and assume all repubs vote for Bush and all dems vote for Kerry:

Then it comes out even: 46 for bush, 46 for kerry:

If you used the same ratio as the previous poll:
Then Bush is at 50% and Kerry is at 42%:
SO THE CHANGE IS SIMPLE IN THE SAMPLE SELECTION!!!!

Are they the same old tired people from Daddy's regime?

The Bush/Cheney 2004 organization is the most professional and well resourced crew in political history.

Save your crocodile tears for another forum and another day croc.

"Bush was favored in polls to win this debate 2 to 1 and my expectations were even greater."

What poll was that?

I'm not sure. I heard it on FOX News a few hours ago. They didn't mention which poll it was. They said "polls".

Nobody in their right mind would have said Bush would win this debate 2 to 1; we've all seen him debate before; he's awkward; the best we could have hoped for was a draw; we didn't get it.

Thank goodness the Democrats don't realize that the presidency isn't a debating club.

This thread has been good for bringing out the newbie trolls, sleeper trolls, pessimists, and the rest of the anti-Bush crowd.

Yeah! He could have asked Bush a similar question, like, Senate record. President Bush, can you give me a summary of Senator Kerry's senate record for the last 20 years?

The fact is, the debate changed nothing. Minds were not changed, voters not swayed, and the November election is the only poll that counts. Kerry's a loser. Always has been. Always will be. Can't say it any plainer than that.

I don't look at the polls. I mean, who do they think they're fooling? I, on the other hand, have been looking at the turnouts at the rallies for both Bush and Kerry. It warms my soul to see the thousands upon thousands of people who turn out for Bush. That alone tells me what I need to know. I think Bush will win. I just can't believe that many people are that stupid to vote for Kerry. I've never been polled. Don't I count? Have you been polled? Don't you count?

I think that is exactly what has happened. A troll convention has decended at FR. They're hoping to demoralize and de-energize Bush supporters.

I don't see how anybody could possibly demoralize Bush supporters more than Bush did himself with that awful debate performance.

I say Kerry should have been nailed in that debate. Do you think that make me a troll?

The idea some posters here could seem to care less that Kerry got away with spouting such BS unchallenged by Bush makes me wonder if THEY are the real trolls.

Newsweek Poll looks fishy because it shows Bush behind among MEN and he had a 15 point lead with Men last week in other polls.

Bush behind 4 points with women on the Newsweek poll

Trying "not to lose" is a bad strategy. Polls show women thought Kerry won so all the effort to look nice for women did not pay off.

"the best we could have hoped for was a draw; we didn't get it."

The C-Span camera following Lockhart around has him saying it WAS a draw!

But I thought Bush was kicking Kerry's butt in the first half.

I mean Kerry has been such a flip-flopper on this issue it is beyond comprehension that Bush wasn't prepared with a wealth of facts and quotes to expose Kerry with.

I really think Bush got some bad advice on how to handle Kerry. He could have easily won this debate IMHO.

But, Jorge, the questions weren't about Kerry; they were all about Bush and what Bush has done wrong.

Didn't you read just the questions?

President Bush, what do you think you did wrong during your presidency?

Next, Senator kerry, what do YOU think President Bush has done wrong in his presidency.

Time is getting short and it was McAuliffe that urged dems to vote in the post debate polls...but there is just no way that people would turn over after just ONE debate!!
