Did anyone else catch this?

Posted on 10/01/2004 4:18:38 PM PDT by mrplind

Correct me if I am wrong, but this has been haunting me all night. I have not gone back and looked at the debate transcripts, but I was taken back last night while watching the debate (on Fox News mind you) when I thought I heard Kerry say something to the effect that we should've, when we invaded Iraq, guarded the nuclear reactors there. Did I miss something? I thought Iraq didn't have nuclear capabilities. Was this a major gaffe or am I out in left field?

Oh, and the by the way, Kerry's a turd.

Iraq had a known nuclear reactor and facility at Tuwaitha. It was inspected on a regular basis by the IAEA and the materials there were placed under seal by them.

Iraq having that site and the materials was not a violation of any UN resolutions, since it was declared, and regularly inspected.

What Kerry was referring to was the looting of the site right after Gulf War II ended, before US troops arrived.

The several tons of yellowcake uranium there (again, the existence of that material was known since the end of Gulf War I, and the material had been left there under seal by the IAEA deliberately) were flown out of Iraq a couple of months ago by the US.

There was no opportunity for Bush to score any sort of points in a reply.

Why would we need to guard "inactive" nuclear facilities?

Yes, he said it and he also said weapons of mass destruction were pouring across the border into Iraq.

But the spinners have no problem with this total incoherence. Just worried that Bush seemed annoyed.

It's hard to argue with someone who has 9 lies in every sentence.

How do you guard anything with a war going on.

IIRC -- The oil ministry was ransacked. None of the low level nuclear material was lost.

From the transcripts, Senator Kerry said this:

"And we got weapons of mass destruction crossing the border every single day, and they're blowing people up. And we don't have enough troops there."

Really? That's important information. WMDs in Iraq? ANOTHER FLIP-FLOP!

Kerry is fos. He'll say ANYTHING for effect. But he has no substance. He disparges all the things we hold dear -- just to gain votes from the uninformed.

I've heard reference to the "wink". Jim Lehrer shakes Bush's hand, walks over to Lurch and winks while shaking his hand.

Can anybody verify that?

..... That's exactly where we find ourselves today. There's a sense of American occupation. The only building that was guarded when the troops when into Baghdad was the oil ministry. We didn't guard the nuclear facilities.

I heard that too.
Just a thought, probably Kerry and Lehrer baiting GW to pronounce "nuclear."

7.62 x 51mm,

Thanks for the kind words. No, she hasn't delivered yet. "Eli" is due in early January. We have a 2 1/2 year old daughter who is very excited, though! :)

Did I mention that I think Kerry is a turd?

Why would we need to guard "inactive" nuclear facilities?

That is a better point, although remember, we did pull out about a ton of uranium from there, plus I am sure that there was radioactive waste....

I really think he was lying through his teeth that the only thing we defended was the oil ministry. It seems to me that I remember a lot of stories on how our troops were guarding too many things and thus spread too thin, right after we took Baghdad.

May still have radio active material there. Although it's probably not weapons grade, it could make a heck of a dirty bomb.

See I got confused, I thought he was talking about the former USSR's nuke material. That is more sKerry than the stuff laying around IRAQ.

That is exactly what he said and that is exactly what I asked myself (...but I though Iraq didn't have nuclear capability...)

Kerry spoke very well last night. I have to say, he spoke better than our president (he is, after all, a professional politician...). However, everything he said was a lie. Bush could have presented a lot better, but what he did say he said from his heart and real Americans know it.

Kerry is an imbecile and a liar. W is a leader.

"And we got weapons of mass destruction crossing the border every single day, and they're blowing people up. And we don't have enough troops there."

..and where, per-se did these WMDs come from originally? Who in the region had the money, knowledge, motive, opportunity, and history to make these? Could it be the WMDs (like the serin shells we found) were coming BACK to Iraq?

The thing that struck me is his complaint that we guarded only the oil ministry. Now, I'm not sure what the strategic reason for doing that was, but how would guarding an office building in Baghdad help us to "steal their oil". Certainly that is what he was trying to imply.

And yes, Kerry is a turd.

Welcome to the monkey house.

Well, you know, I think it's probably a good thing that we guarded the oil ministry 'cause I figure that's where all those Oil for Food Scandal documents came from.

You ARE correct! And this was before he offered to give Ayatollah Khomeini nuclear fuel and technology. Maybe he would like to offer Zarqawi some weapons also if he 'promises' not to use them against us. What a putz.
