The most telling point was at the very end of the debate. Kerry's pompous, trite ending speech was a bust. Pres. Bush just talked from the heart with no pretense. Then, finally, the most telling part came at the time when Pres. Bush's family came up to greet him. I don't mean to make fun, but the truth is that when Teresa waddled up on the stage, it looked like she had overdosed on chocolate eclairs and then copied Laura's outfit (or tried to). She had the usual bored look on her face as Kerry hugged her. I tell you if we have to endure this imperial "who cares?" woman as first lady, - - - ooooooooh! Twinkie's head hurts!

Bush played tonight not to win but to not lose. He succeeded at that. No gaffes.

Worse for Kerry, we have some great tv ad sound bites:

Global test

We didn't need that tax cut

Give Iran nuclear fuel

I've never waivered on Iraq

This is one of those nights that will look a lot better after the fact.

"Oh, you moron... you selfish moron. Folks here alreayd KNOW about Kerry and what a jerk he is... but if you want to slow down this discussion with your graphics I have to wonder about YOUR political leanings... I mwan, if you want to slow down our republican/conservative chat, are you a democRAT? Because your selfish attitude and actions are helping them, not us."

Nice try and trying to shut up a Viet Nam vet who was there WHEN Kerry was.

How dare you attack me and call me a moron!!!!!!

Just keep your opinions to yourself!

To bad you don't want anyone else to see what Kerry REALLY is!

You're welcome.

I understand why people are reacting as they are. We have an emotional stake in this President and this election. Our President has been relentlessly attacked to the point we're hypersensitive to every small movement that might warrant a critique.

I can only cite my experience in 2000 as to why there needs to be a separation over how "partisans" react, and how undecideds react.

I wanted Bush to win in 2000. I championed him largely because of his Character. Gore was connected to the Clinton W.H. Despite my desire for Bush to win, I did not have the personal attachment to him I do now. I was more or less removed while observing the debates. I measured their responses against each other. IMO, neither Bush nor Gore did well in the first debate, but over the course of the debates I felt Bush had won. Actually, at the time I felt both Cheney and Leiberman had outperformed each presidential candidate.

True undecideds approached this debate the way I did in 2000, That is why Bush taking the edge in substance over the long term is going to help him. Whomever the talking head or polls declare the winner in style, does not translate to having won their votes.

My, my. Such pessimism. A disaster for Bush? Are you really serious? What do you think of Kerry's "global test"? What do you think most of the voters are going to think about it?

"I can't recall a thing Kerry said that translates into policy and I can remember many things the President said."

If you look back at what democrats like ann richards and al gore have said about bush's debating techniques is that he just keeps hammering the same points home again and again. He doesn't get distracted - he puts his head down and gets his message out.

JFnK, OTOH, needs to explain everything to everyone.

Few people will remember exactly what is said. But they will remember the general impression. And it's not good for kerry.

"Kerry: The boston Flailer."

Hehehe

His hand gestures were very distracting and annoying. I found myself watching his hands the whole time he was speaking after a while. And his gestures with his thumbs.... ugh!

I thought Kerry came off better than Gore did 4 years ago, and that is what scares me. Gore almost won, and he was an awful candidate.

Of course, I don't agree with Kerry, but he debated better than Gore did 4 years ago.

There was nothing John Kerry could say in that debate tonight that would change George W. Bush's base, we are solid behind him. As for the undecided.....who knows.....

Ya know the bottom line is this... The Candidate can say anything he likes about what he would do..... IF I WERE PRESDENT, I"D BOMB NORTH KOREA ".. it's just written off as " his policy"..... Now if the sitting president of the United States says the same thing .. it 's a a "WAR DECLEARATION".. The candidate if free to speculate all he wants.. However if the President states the same thing it's "US POLICY" The President words are held to a higher standard.. Too bad the American public doesn't understand this nuance

Excellent point!

Kerry is a terrorist appeaser and I'm not sure Bush made that clear, though Kerry certainly did with his 'coalition building' hogwash.

He'll be busy building his coalition while an entire US city gets smoked.

Initial reactions are that Kerry was polished, slick and presidential and Bush seemed to lack confidence.

Of all my impressions of the substance, it was GWB's posture that I noticed most. He was hunched over the podium much of the time and it made him look less self-confident than he's appeared out on the trail lately.

The rest of it just makes me too nervous to expand on at this point.

I got news for ya.. the American people, as a rule, only CARE about style points. They don't understand substance. We're in the land that worships folks like P-Diddy and Paris Hilton. We lost horribly tonight.

I agree, but I think in the short run, style points count. In the long term, and with likely voters, substance counts.

Swing voters are by definition uninformed. I've decided that Bush wanted to have this debate first so they could spend the next month tearing apart Kerry's foreign policy statements. They analyzed his debate techniques which are very attorney like. He plays to the audience of the moment... the jury of the moment. John Kerry is not a long term planner.

So yes, this debate will have a short term positive effect for John Kerry, but between blogs, the internet, and Fox News - prepare to see John Kerry's and Bush's responses torn to pieces... and under intense scrutiny, Bush wins hands down.

Petronski,

Dzerzhinksky's statue stood in front of the Lubianka right up until the implosion of the USSR. He was never purged and the name wasn't changed back until the implosion. The commies there are now trying to return the statue to its place.

His attack on Bush over Tora Bora was inconsistent as well. Gee, we should give Saddam more time with diplomacy and yet it is because of too much attention to diplomacy (the cease fire) that caused Osama to escape in the first place.
