A new super volcano? I certainly hope not, the WOT is lost if a new US super volcano erupts. On the bright side, taxes will go down alot.

Mount St. Helens update: Officials at the U.S. Geological Survey news briefing said scientists expect to see a moderate eruption spewing ash, a steam explosion, or lava flow in the crater of Mount St. Helens possibly sometime in the next month. They also said Secretary of Interior Gale Norton is coming to Washington state on Saturday, to get a closer look at the volcano.

They were saying "small to moderate". Now it's just moderate within a month. Some scientists are saying today or tomorrow.

Volcano Preparedness.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
Use goggles and wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses.
Use a dust mask or hold a damp cloth over your face to help breathing.
Do not run car or truck engines. Driving can stir up volcanic ash that can clog engines and stall vehicles. Moving parts can be damaged from abrasion, including bearings, brakes, and transmissions.

"The lahare from Mt. Rainer would basically wipe out Seatle."Lahar
Lahar is an Indonesian word for a rapidly flowing mixture of rock debris and water that originates on the slopes of a volcano. Lahars are also referred to as volcanic mudflows or debris flows. They form in a variety of ways, chiefly by the rapid melting of snow and ice by pyroclastic flows, intense rainfall on loose volcanic rock deposits, breakout of a lake dammed by volcanic deposits, and as a consequence of debris avalanches

Very interesting page about the Columbus Day storm. I was in Olympia, but too young to remember it. My parents moved us all in with friends who had a woodburning stove so we could eat, because the power was out for days. The hurricane force windstorm was totally unexpected.

Yep.
Hurricanes in the Liberal precincts in Florida. Volcanic eruptions in the Liberal sectors of WA. Earthquakes in CA.
It's all a diabolical plan for Bush to wip out the Liberal populations in our country before Nov. 2nd! LOL
To: datura
Even just a lahar would be hell around here. No joke. I'm at a high enough elevation (I think), but I'd have a front row seat when it takes out the valley below me along the White River.

How far is Baker from . . . Bellingham and such places on the Canadian boarder? I lived in Bellingham. It seems to me that it took us about 20 minutes to get to Mt.Baker and maybe 30 minutes to get to the Canadian border. Of course my memory could be off by a little bit since I lived there for just the one year and that was,...hem...24 years ago.

I think I get . . . weary . . .
of undue adulation of EXPERTS.
"is that a trainI hear?"
"-- you are NOT an expert!"
"but we appear to be stuck on what looks like train tracks?"
"-- you have NEVER worked for the Pacific Railroad."
"I have heard a lot of trains, and that looks like the engine light headed our way... can we move now."
"--listen pal, I have already pointed out two things, you are not an expert and have never worked for the railroad. Your credentials aren't actually worth spit to me."
"Well, okay, but I am getting out of the truck now, I think you should too. We only have seconds now... get out NOW! Please!"
"--why should I bother to listen to y---- BLAM CRUNCH GASP of death--- (thought) it's not MY fault he wasn't a damned expert, this is so wrong..."
even an idiot, can see or hear a train coming.
I hope we don't have a series of eruptions. But it is looking to the experts and to the laymen, that it is a definite probability. Hence the raised warnings, and the earthquake monitors going bonkers.
An event is higher likelihood this week than it was last year. lots higher. Those are the facts.

There had been enough historic era, and late pre-historic era, evidence to know that none of the Cascade volcanoes were "dead." The Cascade volcanoes were the focus of increasing study since the eruptions of Mt. Lassen in the early 1900's. I have read older (pre-plate tectonics era) geologic papers which proposed a number of mechanisms for the formation of the Cascades, but it was only after the late 1960's when a good model and understanding of subduction-related vulcanism was developed.
Your "key word" is "explosive." In the old literature that term would have been used in relation with Vesuvius, Mt. Pele, and Karkatoa. Since the Lassen eruption, and the pioneer/Indian stories about the other Cascade eruptions suggest a much less violent type, you could very well be right.
