Senator John Kerry was given a stark warning yesterday that President George W Bush is an unorthodox genius at live television who will spurn a debate with his opponent and instead appeal directly to viewers in Thursday's presidential showdown.
With Democrats desperately hoping that Mr Kerry will exploit his decades of debating experience to cut into Mr Bush's lead, both candidates have abandoned the campaign trail to prepare for the first of their three debates, in Miami.
But Garry Mauro, one of the few politicians to have debated with the president, warned Mr Kerry that the Democrat's acclaimed skill as a traditional set-piece debater will not help him to counter Mr Bush.
Mr Mauro, Mr Bush's defeated rival for the Texas governorship in 1998, said Mr Kerry's record in debating the finer points of policy will be of no use. Instead he should prepare for an unabashed pitch for the affections of the people.

That cutsy little move by Gore and Bush's Texas reaction helped Bush tremendously. Almost sorry to see they've eliminated the chance of something like it happening again.
Yea, that was Gore being the 'alpha male'
I thought Bush was going to deck him
No, I don't but I do remember that W just looked up at Gore and winked.....classic! :-)
Gee, two liberals debating each other and the more liberal one won-what a shock!
So now Kerry has to be the anti-war-pro-war candidate so he can keep his base and win over the undecideds who do not trust him on defense issues.
I would say that is a little more different then running in a one party state.
But what about Dingell-Norwood?
Odd days-flip
Even days-flop
It's alphabetized. Stupid on even days, genius on odd days. Except in leap years.
Kerry has an anger problem.
He has a big ego and expects to be taken 'seriously'
Watch Bush use that to cut him down to size.
Bush is the President, Kerry a wanna-be Jr. senator from Mass.
Who is the big dog in the fight?
Kerry's handlers may be on to a good strategy, but they lack one key ingredient, a candidate who can stick to the strategy. I say this for one reason. GW is a man who is very comfortable in his own skin, Kerry has never been comfortable in his. He is easily intimidated and upset. GW can admit he's human and role with the punches, Kerry gets upset. Kerry has never debated such an unorthodox debater. GW will conect with the audience, while Kerry will be trying to connect with himself. Sorry, I don't see Kerry doing anything but shooting himself repeatedly in the foot.
You hand wringers need to calm down
Great job! That one shot of him saluting he looks like Gilligan. Someone needs to Photoshop a sailor hat on him.
So Bush will ignore John Kerry completely? I wish we all could. Let's hope that on November 3rd he returns to the obscurity he so richly deserves.
likely; however, don't expect the MSM to report a Bush win in the debates... they didn't in 2000... it wasn't until the people/viewers actually weighed in that they had to concede that Dubya' won... except for the third debate... i think everyone pretty much knew immediately that Dubya' shined...
Not always. He needs to be absolutely prepared. Then he can appear to be a genius. But I have seen him at events where he was poorly prepared, and he came across like a high-school freshman who did not study before the next day's debate competition. I'm sure, though, that his people have got him ready as he can be. But so have Kerry's folks. Kerry has nothing to lose, so he may pull out all the stops.
That incident from that debate still makes me smile. Bush was NOT intimidated, and that's obviously what Gore was trying to do.
"kerry will blow it .... he will fold under pressure infront of the american people"
Just like Gore.
That was great! I needed a late night laugh.
thx
Yes, how insidious, appealing directly to the voting audience, almost as conniving as Ronald Reagan. He apparentlly doesn't have the decency to make his pitch exclusively to those inside the bubble.
In keeping with the recent "Star Wars" DVD release, someone please get a picture of Peter Cushing as the Grand Moff Tarkin (from Episode IV), side by side with Kerry. Aside from the hair factor, there's not much difference.
