The phones at the Selective Service System in Washington, D.C., ring more frequently these days. And some of the callers are nothing short of hysterical.
Officials at the once little-known federal agency responsible for running any future military draft say they have been receiving thousands of calls in recent months from people who are under the impression that mandatory conscription for men and women age 18 to 26 is imminent.
Janice Hughes, a public and intergovernmental affairs specialist with the agency, fielded one from an American woman calling from Italy on a cell phone. "She heard there would be a draft of women and she didn't want to come back," Hughes said.
Hughes gave her stock reply: "It's not true. We would know. We're the entity that would run a draft if it ever did happen."
The calls keep coming even after repeated assurances from the White House, the Pentagon and Capitol Hill that there is no desire, need or plan for a draft.

In that case you better..."stay out the Bushes, stay out the Bushes, stay out the Bushes!!"
the troops will not die because of criticism of pres bush. let's put the blame where it belongs..they are in iraq being killed by iraqis and assorted muslim monsters.
Democrat leaders are lying and causing this hysteria. Kerry is fueling this---shame on him! Listen all you liberal kool aid drinkers--Kerry is leading you around by the nose like an animal--I'd be mad if I were you!!
You have a good point.
I suppose this a "matter of degree".
Every election year my grandmother lives with the worry that she may soon be "eating cat food to survive" and when a Republican is elected, she spends the next 4 years waiting to lose her SS/medical benefits or become "a homeless person".
There is no consoling or rationalizing with her because she believes the Dem's lies.
That is at the very least, emotional terrorism.
And yes, I suppose I am indignant about it because it affects my family.
How can we counter this? Fight fire with fire?
I suggest we start an email campaign to counter that phony email that is circulating. Anyone know how to acquire addresses? Perhaps intercept and 'reply all' to every one of these (phony) emails that happened to be forwarded?
The phony email warns that Bush is behind reinstating a draft. We all know it is a trick to fool the gulible and politically ignorant/brainwashed, especially those in college. Many college students have already received the bogus email. The email is just another political dirty trick that intends to scare them to the polls to vote against Bush by voting for Kerry.
