Relax, mom, there are no plans to reinstate the draft
The Star-Ledger (NJ) ^ | 9/24/04 | WAYNE WOOLLEY

The phones at the Selective Service System in Washington, D.C., ring more frequently these days. And some of the callers are nothing short of hysterical.

Officials at the once little-known federal agency responsible for running any future military draft say they have been receiving thousands of calls in recent months from people who are under the impression that mandatory conscription for men and women age 18 to 26 is imminent.

Janice Hughes, a public and intergovernmental affairs specialist with the agency, fielded one from an American woman calling from Italy on a cell phone. "She heard there would be a draft of women and she didn't want to come back," Hughes said.

Hughes gave her stock reply: "It's not true. We would know. We're the entity that would run a draft if it ever did happen."

The calls keep coming even after repeated assurances from the White House, the Pentagon and Capitol Hill that there is no desire, need or plan for a draft.

Thanks for finding this.

"The Internet is helping propagate the myth that there is a secret government plan," Zellen said. He points to the war in Iraq as one of the roots of the rumors. The other catalysts, he and others following the issue said, came from events in Washington over the past 18 months.

The first came in January 2003 when Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.) introduced separate bills calling for draft-age men and women to perform military or civilian government service. Both congressmen were vocal opponents of the Iraq war and both conceded that neither bill had a chance of ever coming to a vote in the Republican- controlled Congress. "

The rumours have been flying.

The Democrats are playing their usual dirty tricks. Democrats propose a draft and then blame Republicans and use it to scare people.

The Selective Service might help by telling the callers that Democrat Congressmen are putting legislation forward, to institute a draft. Emphasize the word Democrat.

There's a spam email going around saying that there are two house bills that are pending which will reinstate the draft after the election if, horror of horrors, George W. is reelected.

Democrat dirty tricks (once more, instead of relying on facts, they're trying scare tactics).

How about black churches -- are they going to get burnt down if W is re-elected?

Why aren't the same upset people clamoring to dissolve the selective service?

That may be because fears the draft will be resurrected after 31 years of dormancy continue to be stoked in Internet chat rooms and chain e-mails and most recently on the presidential campaign trail...

Hmmm, I wonder who's behind this campaign?

Well, for one. The body parts flying though the air.

I understand why you are indignant, buts lets not demean the word "terrorism" from it's true horror.

The Democrats in Congress have introduced legislation calling for a draft, but the Republican's oppose it. So if you don't want a draft, vote GOP.

Only after W drags James Byrd around again & disenfranchises several million black voters...

It was not that long ago that our Army had close to 800,000 soldiers. There was no draft--they were all volunteers. We are now at about 500,000. There's no doubt that the Army needs to get bigger, but probably not up to 800,000 and it certainly does not require a draft.

"Only after W drags James Byrd around again & disenfranchises several million black voters..."

And he also has to throw some grannies out in the street, and take away their medicines; and then he's got to starve some school children (but Ter-ray-za might give them some ketchup); and John Ashcroft will have to throw a big blanket over Janet Jackson.....

The Bushies are going to be very busy in the next 4 years!

This has been bolstered by Kerry saying Bush would institute the draft. A DEMOCRAT scare tactic all the way.

I guess I should thank Kerry. He spouted this cr@p yesterday.

The internet had been filled with these rumours for a few months.

Now we can see a few people doing some clarification.

I want the e-mail of each person who bothers to call the Selective Service Administration. Sounds like one of them would be just the person to help my uncle Lilike Ubanke, who was the driver of the former President of Nigeria...
