SWIFTVETS ARE CORRECT: Fonda apologized; Kerry hasn't

In the new Swiftvet ad, those Americas who were still unaware have learned that John Kerry illegally went to Paris to negotiate with the enemy. Whether it was genuine can be debated, but even Jane Fonda apologized. Kerry never has. He was offered a chance by the Swiftvets, but he refused.

Good men died because he lied.

HANOI JANE FONDA APOLOGIZES
"I would like to say something, not just to Vietnam veterans in New England, but to men who were in Vietnam, who I hurt, or whose pain I caused to deepen because of things that I said or did," she began. "I was trying to help end the killing and the war, but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I'm very sorry that I hurt them. And I want to apologize to them and their families."

Hanoi Jane never really apologized...I think she used the word *regret*...I remember at the time that the VN vets did not consider it an apology.

In 1988, sixteen years after denouncing American soldiers as war criminals and tortured POWs as possessed of overactive imaginations, Fonda met with Vietnam veterans to apologize for her actions. It's interesting to note that this nationally-televised apology (during which she attempted to minimize her actions by characterizing them as "thoughtless and careless") came at a time when New England vets were successfully disrupting a film project she was working on. It's also interesting that not only was this apology delivered sixteen years after the fact, but it has not been offered again since.

I hope she rots in hell.

Didn't her apology come around the time she got a little religion in her and she split up with Mr. CNN, whatzizname...Turner? It struck me at the time that she was starting to get a little long in the tooth and she could hear the hellhounds barking, hence the need for a little payment on the ol' karma bill.

I for one did not consider it an apology. When she did it I wrote her and told her it was not accepted.

"Good men died because he lied" would make an excellent lapel pin and bumper sticker message. Does anyone know if those items are for sale?

This is the one on my car:

Available here on cafepress.

Hanoi Jane never really apologized...I think she used the word *regret* ...

In 1988, some 16 years after her tour of Hanoi when she made her famous radio broadcast and had her picture taken behind the same anti- aircraft guns that were shooting down US pilots, Jane Fonda appeard on 20/20 and was interviewed by Barbara Walters. Two versions of this interview exist, one an actual transcript, the other a press release.

The transcript reads:

Barbara Walters: "There are still people who . . . I guess feel you have never apologized. Would you like to just say something to them now?"

Jane Fonda: "Well . . . it's not . . . I would like to say something not just to . . . the Vietnam veterans . . . in New England . . . but . . . to . . . to men who were in Vietnam who . . . who I hurt . . . or who's pain I caused to . . . deepen because of things I said . . . or did . . . I . . . I feel that I owe them an apology . . . my intentions were never to hurt them . . . or to make their situation worse, it was . . . it was the contrary . . . I was trying to help end the war . . . but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I . . . and I am very sorry . . . that I hurt them . . . and I want to apologize to them and to their families . . . ."

This was released to the media as:

I would like to say something, not just to Vietnam veterans in New England, but to men who were in Vietnam, who I hurt, or whose pain I caused to deepen because of things that I said or did," Fonda said.

"I was trying to help end the killing and the war, but there were times when I was thoughtless and careless about it and I'm . . . very sorry that I hurt them. And I want to apologize to them and their families."

In both versions, there is a direct reference to the veterans in New England and this points to the reason for the timing of the apology.

At the time, Fonda was filming "Stanley and Iris" on location in a number of blue-collar New England towns. Production on the movie was being severely disrupted by protesting veterans and this was causing a serious problem for the film. Fonda decided that something had to be done, so she went on 20/20.

Is it correct that the vets were more accepting of Peter Fonda's apology? I had heard they were. Maybe it's because, to the best of my knowledge, he protested over here and didn't actually go film propaganda with the VC.

Yeah. I'm with you on the "apology not accepted." She was motivated by money only. Figured you'd make good use of what appears to be an accurate report, it's repeated at quite a few websites.

"The thing to note is that Fonda made a real apology; she owned up to her actions. No weasel words like: I apologize to those who might have been offended by blah, blah, blah. I'm not a fan of hers by any means, but credit where credit is due."

I agree.
Tokyo Jane lost 100 points for what she did during the war.
I gave her back 10 when she dumped Red Turner.
And don't forget, everytime she has played a prostitute she has won an academy award, That's got to be worth at least another 10.

"...why apologize to New England veterans?"

The apology is probably a quote drawn from a speaking engagment here in NE

Even my twisty mind can't figure out how the Dims are going to spin their way out of this one.

Fonda is still a flaming liberal, but if she comes forward to either deny or reiterate her "apology," it just highlights what both she AND Kerry did and didn't do.

I'm betting that this ad will graft Hanoi Jane's past right onto Kerry's back. This will be one ad he won't be able to shake, even if Fonda does jump to his rescue.

Jane's history is now Kerry's...and because of it his political career will be HISTORY.

Reminds me of the homemade sign my Vietnam vet husband and I made for Jane Fonda as she came to Fort Worth to speak at a convention:

"Jane, you ignorant slut!"

That's what I said the next Bush commercial should be: A voice over a picture of Jane Fonda saying, "Do you know the difference between John Kerry and Jane Fonda? NOTHING except Ms. Fonda apologized to our Vets.
